MacPhails from North Uist?
« on: Monday 17 February 14 00:33 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone one here have records of the MACPHAIL family below?

I have a John MacPhail (b. late 1700s?) married to Mary MacLennan (b. late 1700s?) with issue Archibald, Angus (Mor), Donald, John, Neil, and two other unknown daughters. The information I have (The History of Inverness County, page 481) indicates ""In early days, probably about 1825, five sons of John McPhail of NorthUist and Mary McLennan his wife settled at Upper River Denys." Note that in this context, Inverness County refers to Cape Breton and not Scotland.

The MacPhail families settled in the Whycocomagh/Blue's Mills/River Denys region of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Hi S_M,

Unfortunately records for that period are hard to come by unless the family had any status.

Have you managed to find out which ship they sailed on or is that what you are hoping to find out?

Hi Annie - Basically, I know nothing except their life in Canada. Anything prior to that is a mystery, except that I know of their connection to North Uist.

Anything you can help with would be great.

Is it possible from census/marriage/death records you could provide guestimate dates of birth for each please to help narrow things down?

I was wondering if you had any luck finding out additional information about the John MacPhail that was born in 1765 on North Uist and died in 1815 in Nova Scotia.

Sincerely,

Derek MacPhail

Hi Derek,
I haven't made much progress, althoug I know John was born in North Uist and settled in Upper River Denys (Nova Scotia) around 1825 (from The History of Inverness County). His son Angus (Mor) MacPhail (1781-1March1871) is also buried in the local cemetery.
