James Reburn- Fordyce
« on: Thursday 17 April 08 15:53 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
My gggg grandfather, James Reburn was married in Fordyce in 1779. I've found a baptism record for James Reburn in Boyndie in 1754, this looks like the same person, is there any way to confirm that?
Thanks,
Rickr

Hi Rickr  :)

I'm not sure if you can be  definitely - as in 100% - certain but Fordyce and Boyndie are adjacent rural parishes so that is in your favour  :)

1. have you looked at the marriage entry to see if it  gives any hints?

2. have you checked for any burial records/MIs for him which might give his age?

3. do you have the name of his children in birth order? If the Scottish naming convention was used, it would indicate his parents' names.

4. have you checked if any other James R*burn married, died, had children, etc.

Regards

Hi Gadget,

Thanks for the help  :) There are no other James Reburns born in the area around the right time.

His children don't help much, second daughter is margaret, same as possible mother, but his son is James, not Henry and there are no other Henrys in our family.

The marriage entry gives no other clues except the location.

I may have to settle for being 'reasonably' sure!

I see that the parents of the 1754 James, appear to have moved to Banff (next parish) by 1757

Full list of this couple's children bpt between 1750 and 1770:

1754 - James - Boyndie
3 Nov 1757 - George - Banff
25 Nov 1759 - John  - Banff
22 Sept 1761 - William - Banff
20 March 1764 - Henry - Banff

Hi Gadget,

Thanks for all the help, I'm fairly new to all this,as you can probably tell.
How did you manage to find all that information so quickly?

Hi Rick

I've been looking at Scottish records for many years now and have lived in various parts of the country.

Here's some useful advice:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html

also a site that i find useful for locating parishes:

http://scotlandsfamily.com/

The IGI does have a lot of Scottish records online:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

and select 'International Genealogical Index'

Also Scotlands People is a must - pay to view but very cheap  :)

Rickr (and Gadget)

Despite 20 years of genealogy research I only found this site tonight - but immediately recognised the Reburn/Raeburn family you are looking at.

My gr/grandmother is a Raeburn (born Ordiquhill and lived all her life in Fordyce).  As part of tracing by Raeburns I did a fairly extensive analysis of Banffshire Raeburns/Reburns/Reaburns about 10 years ago.

Dusting off those papers I see I came to the conclusion that Jame Reburn, born Boyndie, Jun 1754 son of Henry Raeburn and Margaret Allan (who married in Banff in 1751) In addition to the children identified by Gadget I also have an Elspet Raeburn, bn 10 Aug 1752 at Whyntie Farm, Boyndie.

I believe Henry Raeburn was born 6 Jan 1722/23 at Whyntie Boyndie, son of Henry Raeburn and Margaret Castles.  It seems that Henry (jnr) and margaret Allan were at the family home at Whyntie until they moved into Banff between 1754 and 1757.

I don't have marriage for James Reburn in Fordyce in 1779 anywhere in my papers. - So would be facinated to know more about this. Where did you get this from?  Who is his wife?

The nearest marriage I can find is a James Reburn marrying Janet Ogilvie on 19 Jul 1777 Banff.  This couple are buried in Boyndie Churchyard and are my 4gr grandparents.  This James (married to JO) was born in Boyndie in 1745 the son of Thomas Reburn and Jannet Marr.  I believe Thomas (bn 1711 at Whinty, Boyndie) was the eldest brother of Henry Reburn (married to Margaret Allan).

Look forward to hearing from you.

Alan

Hi Allan,

My Great x3 grandfather was James Raeburn or Reburn, born in 1790 and his parents were James Raeburn and Isobel Stewart (or Stuart), who were married in 1779. They had five children in total, James, Jean, Barbara, Mardaret and Elspet. I got the details from the Scotlands people website, with a lot of help and guidance from people on rootschat. Henry Raeburn and Margaret Allan would be my 5Gr grandparents, so we must be 5gr cousins.
I've not come across Henry Raeburn snr and Margaret Castles yet so I'll see what I can find out about them.
All the best,
Rickr

Hi,
I am trying to find more about Elspet Raeburn who married James Riddoch from Rothiemay area.
They must have been married bet 1808 and 1810.
