Robert SMITH in GREAT AYTON

I am truly stuck with this one. In Great Ayton there were two families of Smith which I am interested in.

On the 1871 census were George Smith, his wife Elizabeth Watson (born Healeugh and aged 27) and their son John William (5). Also in Great Ayton was Robert Smith (51) born Kirby and married. No wife is shown but two sons - Russel (note spelling) aged 14 and Robert Henry (5). Robert Snr was married to Elizabeth Russel (born Ingleby Cross), presumably why they called their first son Russel.

George died and was buried in Great Ayton in May 1873.

On the 1881 census, Robert Smith is still shown as M, but no wife. Elizabeth, widow of George is shown as a servant but her son is shown as Son. Three more children appear - Thomas, Isabel and Elizabeth. Russel wasn't shown.

The obvious conclusion was that the widow Elizabeth was the mother of these three with Robert as the father. But in the 1891 census Robert is there, shown as M and Elizabeth born Ingleby Cross is also there along with Russel. Did the original wife reappear? I can't tell from the age either as it doesn't fit either Elizabeth exactly.

A further complication is Thomas, born approx 1874 was called Thomas Pedley Smith. Where does Pedley come from? Thomas Pedley Smith is my great grandfather so i am particularly interested in him.

These 2 families were living next door to each other in 1871 and both Robert & George are shown as b Stokesley so may possibly be brothers

Also in Great Ayton was Robert Smith (51) born Kirby and married.

Robert Smith with sons Russel and Robert Henry was only 39 and was born Stokesley - please see 1871 image

Thanks for quick replies, sorry, Robert was shown as 39 in 1871 census and 51 in 1881. I think they are the same person as the son Robert Henry was born Goathland and appears in the same family with Robert Snr in 1861,1871 and 1881? And Kirby is the same area? What do you thnk?

I agree that the 1881 family is a combination of the 1871 plus additions

George died 1873 but there are children aged 9, 6 and 5 in 1881

It is feasible that Thomas aged 9 was the son of George

One way to find out

Births March qtr 1876   Isabel  Smith  Stokesley  9d 652

Her birth cert will (hopefully) solve the mystery

Thank you - I never thought about Thomas being the son of George and Elizabeth, although I reaslised it was close in dates. I'll follow up as you suggest, your help is much appreciated.

Everybody, thanks for helping. Thomas was the son of George Smith, who died the year Thomas was born. (I got Thomas Pedley Smiths marriage certificate which showed his father , George, deceased)

I've just joined Rootschat and seen your message about Thomas Pedley Smith. He married Henrietta Inns in Hartlepool in 1902. Henrietta is my first cousin twice removed, so I would be interested to know more about her descendants.
