Is there a place in North Yorks called St. Lawrence?
« on: Friday 29 August 14 15:58 BST (UK) »
The only reason I ask is that I have been digging through some previous research and have come across a chap called Robert Sutton whose census data (such as it is) appears thus:

1841 census: living in St. Lawrence, North Yorks.
1861 census: living North Street, York, North Yorks.
1871 census: living North Street, York, North Yorks.
1881 census: living North Street, York, North Yorks.
1891 census: living St. Lawrence, North Yorks.
1901 census: living in York, North Yorks.

All of the above was supplied to me by someone who obviously failed to pass on the important details like the folio and page, etc.

OK ... I've now pinned this chap EVERYWHERE (inc. marriage, death, etc.) in all the censuses EXCEPT 1851.

I'm guessing that he will be with his wife, Ann (nee Harrison) and the data people will need is as follows ...
  • Robert SUTTON born c1819 Malton, North Yorkshire
  • Ann SUTTON born c1826 Sharow, Yorkshire
  • 1841 23 March = Married St. Lawrence, York
  • 1841 = St Lawrence, York, Yorkshire
  • 1861 = 4 All Saints Court, All Saints North Street, York, Yorkshire
  • 1871 = 4 All Saints Court, All Saints North Street, York, Yorkshire
  • 1881 = 4 All Saints Court, All Saints North Street, York, Yorkshire
  • 1891 = 12 Fishingate, St Lawrence, York, Yorkshire
  • 1901 = 1 Markham Street, York, Yorkshire
  • 1905 = Robert dies in York
  • 1911 = widow Ann is living with her son Charles Watkinson Sutton at 23 Feversham Crescent, Wigginton Road, York, Yorkshire-East Riding
Can anyone help with 1851 please?

I haven't checked the 1851 Census for your Robert Sutton, BUT I have looked at my 1851 York Directory.  The only Robert Sutton I can see is Rev. Robert Sutton, Vicar, in Fulford.  Would that be him?

Hi
Thanks for your efforts, but I think it highly unlikely that he will the chap that you have suggested, since in the post-1851 censuses my Robert Sutton is a hotel waiter and later a tobacconist.
Thanks anyway.
