Roberts
« on: Tuesday 15 October 13 03:34 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out any information on an address in Whitburn. On my Uncle's birth certificate it shows  William Roberts born 11 February 1924 at 3 Dixon Terrace Whitburn. I am trying to find out if this was a small farm or maybe even a miners cottage ( as his father was a coal miner). Looking on my computer this area now looks like it may be an industrial area. Hoping someone can assist me.

It is still on the map - I used www.streetmap.org.uk - but as you say there aren't any houses there now.

The 1892-1905 six-inch map shows the road branching at Brucefield and running west-south-west past the farm of Burnhouse, with no other houses along it.

The 1945-48 and 1955-61 one-inch maps show a row of houses east of Burnhouse, and some industrial development further west - some sort of mine.

The 1973 1:50,000 map shows Burnhouse but the row of houses is not shown. So the houses must have been built before 1924 and demolished between 1961 and 1973.

Given those dates, and the fact that there was a mine further along the road, I would guess that No 13 was one of a row of early 20th century miners' cottages.

You could try West Lothian Council archives

or local history library

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
