Orton on the Hill Leicestershire
« on: Tuesday 10 June 14 06:21 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I'm new to these boards, however I've been researching my family history for many years. I have currently hit a stumbling block while trying to locate the parents of my 4x great grandparent John and Sarah Timbrell.

John Timbrell married Sarah Baker in 1798 at Orton on the Hill. I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise me on how I might discover the names of both their father's (if there were entered on the marriage certificate) and possibly where they were living at the time? I have been unable to find anything on Ancestry as any Timbrell information appears to be very limited.
John and Sarah's marriage was a short one, sadly he died in 1801.

Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer me. Very much appreciate it.

Hi Karen ...

A warm welcome to Rootschat!

The baptism records for Orton-on-the-Hill can be found on the Family Search website, but unfortunately there's no sign of John or Sarah.

Fathers' names were rarely included in marriage records pre-1837, you really need to find baptism records for each of them.  It's probably a case of getting a map of Leicestershire parishes (almost certain to be one online!) and working outwards from Orton-on-the-Hill.  Use Family Search and the website www.freereg.org.uk to see if they have the relevant parish records.

Just two further thoughts:

Is John buried in Orton-on-the-Hill or elsewhere?

There is a Sarah "KIMBERLIN" (corrected to TIMBRELL), a widow born c1780, living in Sheepy Parva, Leicestershire, on the 1851 census.  Her birthplace is recorded as Anseley, Warwickshire.  (In case it's of use, there are other members of the TIMBRELL family on the same page of the census.)

Hope this may give you some leads to follow!

Have looked again at that census page included Sarah "KIMBERLIN".  In one of the other families, the children's birthplaces are recorded as Orton-on-the-Hill and Anseley(?), Warwickshire.

Is there any clue worth chasing up in the names of witnesses to John and Sarah's marriage?

Hi Pennie, thank you for the welcome and information. You have found the correct Sarah Timbrell born in Ansley. We have been quite lucky in finding information on Sarah after John's death, however not so lucky with John who died so soon after they married. He is buried in Sheepy Magna, however a relative believes he may have been born in Polesworth. Finding witnesses to their marriage could be very helpful as they may have been related.

Thanks again for your help.
Regards
Karen.

Why don't you post on the Leic board - it might be that someone is going to the records office and will be able to look up the marriage registration cert for you.

It won't give parents' names, but it will say if either party was not from Orton, and hopefully the witness names will be legible and useful.

Hi Annie
When I joined I was going to post on the Leicestershire board but it told me to make my first post here. Can you have the same post on two boards at the same time?

Thanks
Karen  :)

I don't think duplicate posts are smiled upon -- But the suggestion to post here is only an invitation, not a demand!!  :D

Give it a day or so and then if you don't get any more responses on here, try the Leic board; or even just link a post on the Leic board to this one so it's not actually duplicated.

Moderator comment: moved to Leicestershire. ;)

Hi

The marriage details are:

Orton on the Hill
25-Mar 1798   By Banns
Thomas Timbral   (sic) of Sheepy, Bachelor, and Sarah Barber (sic) of this Parish, Spinster.

The records i have say Thomas rather than John for the Orton marriage.

Regards
