James O'Hara & Ann Grieve
« on: Sunday 14 September 14 15:45 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
I've been really lucky with help from people on these boards before so now I have a new brick wall I could do with some help if anybody can,

I'm trying to find information on my GG Grandparents James O'Hara born c1856 in Ireland & Ann Grieve born c1859 in Ireland, I have found them on the 1891 census living at 5 Muirhead Street Gorbals Glasgow with 3 children Mary 6, Maggie 4 & James 1 again on the 1901 Census at 26 North Street, Glasgow St Matthew with another 4 youngsters, I can't find a marriage for them or death records either on Scotlands People just hoping someone might have a clue where I can look next,

Thankyou
Kane/Cane
O'Hara

Hi Braccy

The children all show as born in Glasgow on the 1891 census that you mention. Have you looked at any of their birth certs? A birth cert at this time should include date and place of parents' marriage.

Did the children remain in Scotland to let you check further for details on parents?

Hi Kim

I think you could well be right, I was having doubts myself that Grieve was the right surname as I have searched Scotland's People & couldn't find anybody that matched the names I have.
Thank you so much for this I will go & look into it & let you know.

Hi Monica

Thank you for the advice, as you can see above I couldn't find any of the children's BCs so maybe Kim is right & I have the wrong surname for Ann O Hara.

Hi Cathy and Kim

I agree, I think Kim you likely found the marriage and some of the births of the children  :)

Cathy, which of their children is your line? Did they marry or die in Scotland? This would let you reconfirm the mother's maiden name.

There is a family online family tree on a/try for this family group. Seems to fit well with everything Kim has added. 1901 here for background:

James O'Hara 48 mason's labourer b. Ireland
Ann O'Hara 40 b. Ireland
Mary O'Hara 15
Maggie O'Hara 13
James O'Hara 11
John O'Hara 9
Francis O'Hara 7
Annie O'Hara 5
Bridget O'Hara 2

Address: 26 North St, Glasgow/Anderston

Only problem...still can't easily see so far a death for Ann Carrigan/O'Hara (with wildcards for spellings) on SP  :-\

Son Francis looks to have married in 1919 to an Annie Wood Gardner. Maybe this marriage cert will give you more clues re parents and whether they still show as alive. Similarly, a search of the Scottish 1911 census might also help with further info.

Hi Monica & Kim

I think I've got some bad information in here somewhere so I stripped everything back to my Grandmother Ellen O'Hara born about 1892 in Dalziel & yes that looks like it is the correct family on the 1901 census, on her Marriage Certificate her parents are Michael O'Hara & Agnes McCarron,
I have found the Marriage Cert for them which states that Michael was aged 25 when he married in 1877 & was the son of James O'Hara & Ann Grieve.
I am struggling to find a BC for Ellen or a DC for Michael her father & have spent a fortune on SP going round in circles, sadly there is no relative I know of to ask so sadly I think I may have to call it a day.

Thank you again for your help

Cathy, looking about I found some info for you and news about other info.

Death:

Dalziel,Glasgow,Lanark
Michael O'Hara
occ:coal miner
married to Agnes Mccarron
died at 3.30pm on 12 November 1914
at 1 Ponteland Square, Craigneuh ? Wislaw,Dalziel
age:58
parents:James O'Hara  general labourer (deceased)
            Ann O'Hara m.s. Grieve (deceased)
died of bronchitis and heart failure
informant: Edward Dallochin  son-in-law  of 8 Ponteland Square

Birth:

Ellen O'Hara
on 11 March 1892 at 3 am
at 1 Mitchells Square, Craigneuh ?, parish of Dalziel
parents:Michael O'Hara  coalminer and Agnes O'Hara m.s. McCarron
who were married 10 May 1877 Carluke

The family in the 1901 census are not your James and Ann as according to Michael and Agnes' marriage cert James was deceased when they married.Which means he died prior to 1877. I looked at the 1871 Scottish census and found a James O'Hara age 51, wife Ann age 48,and two daughters Jane age 16 and Susan age 14. There may be other children but their entry was at bottom of page. I also found a James O'Hara who died 8 February 1875 but cannot be sure he is your relative as the only info is that he's buried in St Peter's Dalbeth cemetery in Glasgow. Another thing is that Ann (Grieve) O'Hara died between 1877 and 1914. There are several Anns in the censuses but you would have to pinpoint which is yours.
Also located this:

1871 Scotland census
Rae Gill Row, Carluke, Lanark

Edward McCarron head of house  age 45  occ:coal miner  born Ireland
Bridget McCarron wife age 48 born Ireland
Edward McCarron son age 10 born Ireland
James McCarron son age 14 occ: ironstone miner born Ireland
John McCarron son age 12 occ: ironstone miner born Ireland
Peter McCarron son age 17 occ: ironstone miner born Ireland

this is the mom & dad & siblings to Agnes. I couldn't locate Agnes in the births so its possible that like her siblings she was born in Ireland. I would say in both cases the families migrated from Ireland to Scotland.

also found Michael O'Hara in 1871 census;

Michael O'Hara age 20  lodger  occ:dealer  born Ireland  residing in Clyde,Glasgow.Lanark

this looks like Agnes' brother.

1901 Scotland census
Anderston, Barony, Glasgow  212 Elliot St

James McCarron head of house age 42 born Ireland
Annie McCarron wife age 37 born Ireland
Patrick McCarron son age 17 born Glasgow
Terrence McCarron son age 15 born Glasgow
Helen McCarron daughter age 13 born Glasgow
John McCarron son age 8 born Glasgow
Thomas McCarron son age 6 born Glasgow
James McCarron son age 4 born Glasgow

Hope this helps,Kim

a hint is that if you cannot find info in a straight line of your descendants try to do it via other family members
