I wonder if any one can help me work out the place listed on a certificate 1820 in Bute, where my ancestor John Mcpherson was a seaman.  It looks like " Basleachdra".
Maybe in the Scalpsy or Kilmorie area.   Thanks,  ab.

Have you tried the Scotlands Places website?

I was looking for somewhere that looked like Taunich in North Bute and it turned up in Scotlands Places as a small settlement that has now vanished. It took a little searching to find it but it included an ordinance survey map of exactly where it was.

 Thanks for the replies.    I will endeavour to search for place name on Scotlands places.     
  By the way  John Mcphersons wife,s name was Mary Black.
  Wondering what being a "seaman " in Bute in 1820   entailed.     Has any one come accros any lists etc. re fisherman or other kinds of seamen about that time?   
  At a later time he states a "porter" as his occupation.
  Could this have been on a steamship or other?

I have an Isobel McPherson who married Archibald McLean in 1780 in Rothesay. She was born in 1759 in Cowston, Inverchaolain to Patrick McPherson and Mary NcLachlane.

She had a sister Mary McPherson born in 1761 in Cowston (this time spellt Cowstone), Inverchaolain. They also had a brother John McPherson born in 1754 in (looks like Baillehregan-haven't been able to find this in Scotlands Places!)Inverchaolain and a sister Ann born in Cowston(this time spellt Coustone!) in 1757.

Just wondering if your McPherson family had a brother, Donald who was  my John,s father.  The time frame would fit as John was born about 1791.  Somewhere I did see Cowston written in relation to my John McPherson, but I presumed it meant Cowal.
Anyway Inverchaolian is probably in Cowal.
 John ,and father Donald were in  Rothesay ,Bute when John married  Mary Black in 1812. Donald was "tenant in Scalpsy" according to certificate.
John Mary @ family were then in Glasgow for 1841  census.
