If this is the correct Church then it didn`t have a graveyard .

Maybe it isn`t the right church after all. In 1881 St Michaels is on Whalley Road, but it does say St Michaels and Angels on the map ?

Unfortunately that isn't the church.

It is what used to be the Youth Club for St Michael's, but is now used as a place of worship. Sadly the church was demolished (it is now a predominantly Asian area of town, so the congregation dropped dramatically).

The church was across the road from this Youth Club. To attend the Youth Club on a Sunday night we all had to go to Evensong first!

I called into the Lancs Family History and Heraldry Society Research Centre today -- but I am sorry to tell you that they do not have the Memorial Inscriptions for St James, Altham.

Maybe if you contact the Hyndburn Branch of that Society they will be able to help.

According to the Lancashire Libraries catalogue listing, they are at Accrington

https://capitadiscovery.co.uk/lancashire/home

put Altham St James in the search box and choose "Author: Altham St James Church"  then scroll down the list.

However Claytonbradley says they are not there, and Rootschatters often know better, so perhaps phone/email Accrington Library to see if they've been moved and if so, where to?

I have just got back home after a week away and was amazed to see all the replies to my query.

A big thank you to you all ,thanks for all the hard work.
As usual it throws up as many questions as answers !

John Wotton Pengelly is a bit of an enigma I had done some research on him as he was a Pengelly born Plymouth in the right period to possibly be one of mine ,but appart from that he had no other similarity with any other part of the family .He was a Vicar in Blackburn, they were all Carpenters in London !,then I got a big piece of help from the Forest of Dean family history group ,his will in which he names his nephews, my family result!

I have no idea how he comes to be in Dalton-in-Furness to marry Sarah Couperthwaite ,or why he goes  back to Devon to be a school teacher, then back to St Bees training to be a Vicar, but I spent ages tracing him in Blackburn at St Michael and All Angels on the Belper Road off the Old Whalley Road, and then into the new St Michael and all Angels on the New Whalley Road ,both of which have sadly been pulled down.Neither seem to have had Graveyards as they were in built up areas and there was a municipal cemetery nearby .

The only connection with Altham I can see is he officiated at some burials there in 1868

As to who are the Tatteshalls who have the same Grave plot number ,I have no idea !,I have had a quick look at my Couperthwaites and can see no link , I will be looking at them closely!

The mention that he was interred in "The family vault" was from the Bristol Mercury, nearest big paper to Aylburton in Gloucester where he died.

Hopefully there is some written record that can be found as to what was on the Grave ,and maybe it makes it all clear!

Thanks again for all the help ,long may it continue !

oops...Sorry for writing so much

Paul

 Me again

I have just tried Googling "St James Altham  Lancashire monumental records"

and on Rootsweb  somebody says they were transcribed by Pendle branch of the LFHHS and are at
Preston Record office
Accrington Library
and LFHHS Pendle Branch Library

But that was back in 2003, they seem to be missing from at least one of them.

Thanks

Go to the following and choose branch resources fron the left hand side.  The records used to be available at Colne library to the public, but not any longer.

I know they aren't at Preston at the archives, because I've asked there when I visited. There is a list saying they have them, but all they have is an index. It seems ridiculous they aren't more widely available when the LFHHS publish all sorts of other records. My sixth cousin kindly went to, well it must have been Colne, and looked up my Broadleys for me, claytonbradley

Sorry ...me again

I have tried searching on the Lancashire Libraries Website and after lots of dead ends

They have 2 copies at (HAC) Accrington which throws me as when I google that it comes up with a Health Centre!,its the Library ?

Apparently
One is on the LCLIS Public Main Catalogue and One in Local Studies Material

Barcode numbers ;30118100082795                 and 30118092056989
Shelfmark; Local LG18/ALT                             and  Local LG18/ALT
Loan Type ;Adult Reference
Status ;Both are down as Available !

This is what it says on their system so I will try and email a live librarian to see if they know otherwise.

Thanks for getting me so far

Paul
