Hi Cindy

Welcome to RootsChat!

These are the children showing for parents Archibald McKenzie and Catherine McKinnon on IGI, all submitted entries rather than actual extracts from the OPRs. Neil's is not showing, but remember these have been submitted by someone researching the same family and they have probably entered the ones they have been able to trace/find:

1. Sarah McKenzie  Birth: About 1812 Of, Barra, Inverness, Scotland
2. JOHN MCKENZIEBirth: About 1807 Of, Barra, Inverness, Scotland
3. DONALD MCKENZIE Birth: 1805 Barra, Inverness, Scotland
4. RORY MCKENZIE Birth: 1808 Barra, Inverness, Scotland

For father Archilbald, all submitted info on IGI:

ARCHIBALD MCKENZIE  Birth: About 1772
Parents: Father: HECTOR MCKENZIE Mother: MARY MCNEIL
Marriages: Spouse: CATHERINE MCKINNON
Marriage:  About 1804  Barra, Inverness, Scotland

Regards.

Monica

Thank You for the welcome Monica and for the response.  8) I have those children listed a total of ten children. I got my list of children from LDS online files which was user submitted. I have found and sent for records from info on LDS that had documented source before and have been able to clarify info on other surnames. I usually have a difficult time clarifying the info that is user submitted :'(. So my info is may not be correct.

The LDS listed my Neil as being born in Barra, Inverness, Scotland. The census info in Nova Scotia list him as being born in Nova Scotia. So perhaps he and some of his siblings were born in Nova Scotia. I need to find out if Archabald and Catherine went to Nova Scotia.

My grampa John Albert Day insisted his McKenzie side came from Barra. He said they were scotch and my Grampa was fluent in speaking Gaelac. Neil MacKenzie was great grandfather to my Grampa John Albert. So I believe that somehow Neil is from the Barra MacKenzies.

The names used in this MacKenzie line are however used in my family names a lot which I have found to be true in many of my surnames the same names being used over and over. I thought that maybe Neil got his name from his LDS grandmother Mary O'Neil. Neil had a grandaughter named Catherine. Who was born Catherine McIntire (unable to locate her father). We also have the names Mary, Hector, John and Murdock

Sorry to ramble. I have been searching for about 5 years for Neil MacKenzie's heritage. I am not sure he was not born in Nova Scotia, but I am sure his parents were from Barra. If not to Archabald then perhaps one of his brothers.  All the info I recieved from my Grampa has checked eventually to be true except this MacKenzie line is a challenge. He was big into his heritage and new a lot. Now he is passed on and I have so many unanwered questions.

Thanx again Monica. If anyone else can help me sort this out it would be appreciated.
Cindy

Cindy

When do you think the family left for Nova Scotia. By the sounds of it probably pre-1841 and the first census.

You probably already have these children for Hector and Mary McNeil, but just in case:

1. MURDOCK MCKENZIE Birth: About 1770 Barra, Inverness, Scotland
2. ARCHIBALD MCKENZIE Birth: About 1772 Barra, Inverness, Scotland
3. DONALD MCKENZIE Birth: About 1774 Barra, Inverness, Scotland
4. JONATHAN MCKENZIE Birth: About 1776 Barra, Inverness, Scotland
5. JOHN MCKENZIE Birth: About 1778 Barra, Inverness, Scotland
6. MARY MCKENZIE Birth: About 1780 Barra, Inverness, Scotland

*  ARCHIBALD MCKENZIE Marriage: About 1804 Barra, Inverness, Scotland
*  JONATHAN MCKENZIE Marriage: 1814 , Inverness, Scotland
*  DONALD MCKENZIE Death: 1869

I saw a programme on UK TV the other day about Barra, somebody doing some genealogy research. There was somebody on the Island who seemed to be the Genealogy Guru with a wealth of info about the Barra families. I have no knowledge of the Barra resources but given the amount of submitted entries on this family line, it may well be worthwhile trying this route. Maybe someone here can assist better than me with contact details.

Regards.

Hello cindyw/Monicalesl,

This is a bit of a long shot but using wildcards on SP I came up with this -

Surname- M*C*E*N*
Forname- N*L
Parent-ARCH*
Parent-M*C*KIN*N

and I got one hit for a Niel in 1812 (between 1800-1820) in All Parishes (but not Barra).
I haven't worked out what the surname actually is but it  is not McKenzie. No matter what it is the other similarities make it worth considering.

Thanx for looking TikTokToo. I may need to look in Nova Scotia for Neil's birth. The 1881 census in Margaree Harbor NS has Neil as 72 years old (1809) and born in Nova Scotia. It is the LDS that has him born 1810 Barra Scotland.
I'll have to find out when and if  Archabald left Scotland for Nova Scotia.

What is SP and how can I get access to it?

Thank You,
Cindy
