1871 Census
RG10/755 Folio 8 Page 9
3 Blackheath Hill, Greenwich

William L Couldery, 48, Butcher, Kent Lewisham
Jane do, Wife, 54, Oxfordshire Witney
Jane do, Daur, 23, Kent Greenwich
Francis do, Son, 20, Butcher, do do
Emma do, Daur, 18, do do
Louisa Parker, Visitor, 10, Berkshire Reading
Sarah Cooper, Servant, 17, General Servant, Kent Greenwich

I have had another look at the 1851 Census, and can now see that Jane's place of birth also looks like Witney.

Thanks for the 1871 info on William Lovelace Couldery. I had most of it already but lacked the address, occupations and page references, so I'm glad you posted that.

Another Greenwich family I'd like to trace through the census is this one:

- James Couldery, born abt. 1790
- Elizabeth (wife), I think she died Q4 1837 in Greenwich but I'm not certain - it could be a different Elizabeth.
- Emma Couldery, born 22 Mar 1822, christened 24 Apr 1822 at St Alphage, Greenwich. Possibly died Q2 1842 - again, not certain this death is the same Emma.
- Margaret Couldery, christened 07 Sep 1825 at St Alphage, Greenwich.
- Robert Couldery, born 21 Jan 1830, christened 17 Feb 1830 at St Alphage, Greenwich.
- Adelaide Victoria Couldery, born 01 Dec 1831, chr. 01 Feb 1832 at St Alphage, Greenwich. Died Q1 1875 Greenwich.
- Sophia Matilda Couldery, born abt. 1834 Greenwich; married George Garrett Q4 1851 St George Southwark; died 14 Nov 1914 Auckland, New Zealand.
- James Couldery, born abt. 1837.

James sr. is in the 1851 census with his son, James jr., and daughters Adelaide and Sophia, but I don't have the details. He's also in 1861 with Adelaide but, again, no details. He should be in 1841 but I haven't found him yet. I don't know if he'll be in 1871 -- FreeBMD shows a Q4 1865 Greenwich death which might be him.

Adelaide should be in the 1871 but I can't find her.

George and Sophia Matilda Garrett are in the 1861 with their daughter Kate Alice and son James William. Again, I need the details. They won't be in 1871 as they were in Auckland, NZ by 1864.

Thanks.

Thanks Dimps.  Obviously I was wrong about Elizabeth dying in 1837. It must have been a different Elizabeth Couldery I found at FreeBMD. I'm glad I was wrong because now I know the approximate year that Elizabeth was born (1792). I noticed James is a widower in 1851 so Elizabeth must have died between 1841 and 1851.

Strange that Adelaide, age 9, is not with her parents in 1841. Can you find her elsewhere? If she happened to be staying with relatives, it could provide an important clue.

I didn't know about Caroline. She wasn't mentioned in the IGI.

Sorry, I have not found Adelaide in 1841 or 1871.

1861 Census
RG9/401 Folio Page 32
2 Trafalgar Road, Greenwich

George Garrett, Head, 34, Corn Dealer, b. Kent Greenwich
Sophie M do, Wife, 29, b. do do
James W do, Son, 9, Scholar, do do
Emma or Anna E(?) do, Daur, 7, do, do do
John H do, Son, 4, do, do do
Eliza F(?) do, Daur, 2. b. do do
Rose(?) A do, Daur, 2 months, b. do do
James Couldery, Father in law, Wid, 73, No Oc, b. do do
Adelaide do Couldery, 29, b. do do
Eliza Baldwin, Serv, 22, Serv, b. N K (presumably Not Known)

Looking again, Rose A is probably Kate A.

Thanks.  I just found this website today that has their arrival in Auckland Oct 12 1863 aboard the "Ganges" from London:

http://0-www.aucklandcity.govt.nz.www.elgar.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/passengers/passenger.html

The names listed are George, Sophia, James, Annie, Harry, and Kate. So I guess the "Emma or Anna E(?)" you found could be Annie. Harry must be John Harry (John H in the census). Perhaps Eliza died in England, as she's not listed on the Ganges passenger list.

The 1851 census has an Edward Couldery in Greenwich who was born abt. 1833. His relationship to the head of the household is "Brother", so I'm anxious to know about the rest of the household, especially the head. Could you post the details please?
