MADDISONs of Spilsby
« on: Monday 10 March 14 19:35 GMT (UK) »
JOHN MADDISON married ANN MADDISON in Spilsby on 16th May 1776 (both "of Spilsby").

They had 7 children: Frances (1777-1851?); Elizabeth (1779-1843?); Ann (1781); John (1783); Esther (1785-1861); Susannah (1787) and Sarah (1790).

ANN MADDISON was buried at Somersby St Margaret on 5 January 1791 and then I lose track of John.  He may have moved to Boston and possibly remarried as I can find possible census records for both Frances and Elizabeth in Boston and Esther married at Boston on 15 October to Edward Thompson (a man 9 years her junior).  However Sarah married in Spilsby (by licence) and Susannah in London.

I am also not able to track down baptisms for either John or Ann that I can "trust".

Can anyone suggest a way forward for me?   :)
Judith

Possible remarriage for John (bottom right) http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=779306&iid=314717

Possible burials in Boston, 1799 (52) and 1810 (63).
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thank you Geoff-E for that information.  :)
I have looked at the signatures of John Maddison for both marriages and it could very well be the same hand.  All factors point to it being his second marriage.
John and Susannah Clough/Cluff had two girls both baptised at Spilsby St James (Mary 1793) and Maria (1801).  I have located possible marriages for them, both at Boston (to Messrs Kitchen and Smith).
The only Susannah Clough baptisms I have discovered are d/o William & Elizabeth Willoughby St Helena ch 25 Oct 1771 or d/o William & Mary Willioughby St Helena ch 12 May 1770.
I have not found a burial for Susannah to help locate the burial of John (presumably after 1801).  Susannah could have remarried, though, just to complicate matters!

The 1799 Burial has John Maddison age 52 (birth c 1747) as a Inn Holder.
Do you have any idea of his Occp?

MARIA, 12 August 1801

Thank you very much for your interest, Trish1120.  :) :)

As the Boston Susannah Maddison's maiden name is Elliss, I don't think this family is connected to the Spilsby one I am interested in.  I don't have an occupation for my John Maddison.

But I still think it likely that the family moved at some stage to Boston as so many later events seem to take place there.   I did see a marriage of a Susannah Maddison in 1808 at Long Sutton - but I can't see any reason (yet) to link that event with my family.
 :)

Hi Bucktaylor64.
I haven't traced any Maddisons beyond the generation of John and Ann's children, so I'm not aware of an Eleanor (b 1813).  As far as I am aware my John had 9 children, but only one son - John born 1783 in Spilsby - to take the family surname into the next generation.  I have not found any reliable information about the younger John.  Do you think your Maddisons might link to him?
