Cumnock Ayr, Ayrshire. John Fergusson and Spouse Christina Anderson
« on: Monday 10 March 14 06:39 GMT (UK) »
G'Day I am trying to trace the parents of both John Fergusson 28 yr a Sawyer, and his spouse Christina Anderson 32 yr. and their 3 children Christina Fergusson b 1845, brother James Fergusson b 1848 and Jane Fegusson b 1850 I know of no other children.

In the 1851 census transcription they are living at
13, Old Toll Cottage, Cumnock Road, Ayr, Ayrshire.
and they are both born in Cumnock and the both girls are listed as born in Ayr, Ayrshire on the census form transcription.

Christina's age is given as 5 years.
James is not mentioned and I have not found his death registerd yet.
Jane's age is given as 1 year I have most of her decendants covered.

can you help?

Hi HALE39,

Haven't found a likely candidate for John yet but think this family looks good for Christina's.

1841 Census - Address  - Old Toll, Ayr

James Anderson         age 45        Smith          born outside Census county
Jane Anderson                  45                           Ayrshire
Christina Anderson            20                               "
Hugh Anderson                 16     Smith Apprentice  "
William Anderson              14                                 "
Thomas Blackwood            20    Smith Jrnymn          "

I think this family are in the same location as John and Christina on the 1851.

Looby

Added - James,Jean and Hugh Anderson are living 2 households away from the Fergussons on the 1851 Census.

Possible birth and Christening for Christina.

Christian Anderson born 3 Dec 1816 - christened 2 Jan 1817 -parents James Anderson and Jean Crichton at Old Cumnock, Ayrshire.

Age is slightly out as this would have made her 24 at the time of the 1841 and 34 at the time of the 1851 Census. Be we all know  how reliable Census ages can be!

Looby :)

Thanks Loobylooayr for the info,
I am descended from Jane Fergusson, with the family's living so close to each other little James aged about 3 yrs in 1851 could be with one of the other family's in the 1851 census night.

John Fergusson and Christina Anderson were married on 14 March 1846 from Parish register entry.

James Fergusson their son was born 3 March 1848 baptised 26 March 1848.

Christina was born 26 Sept 1845 baptised 8 December 1845 of Old Toll and registered on the same day and same page of Parish register as her sister Jane.

Jane Fergusson of Old Toll was born 3 Jan 1850 and baptised 13 January 1850 by Rev. Mr. Renwick who baptised all 3 children.

As for Mother Christina's age variation daughter Jane bent the rules a bit when she married. and so did her future daughter in law.

Cheers

Ages on the 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 0 or 5 for adults in many cases. :)
Have you found the family after 1851?
Do you suspect that Christina and John died pre 1855?
If John died after 1855, you should try and find his death registration, With luck that should have his parents names on it.
I've briefly looked for the family on the 1861 and at the moment have had no success. Were the surviving family (presuming there are deaths/ or perhaps emigration) split up by then?

Don't know about young James? He could have died very young.

Looblooayr
I have a Christina born 1819 in Cumnock Ayr Scotland who fits the Christina in 1841 census form, the LDS gen index 4 way back, the 1816 Christina has a mother Jean Crichton and Christina 1819 has a mother Jane [  ?  ] Anderson so I think the Blacksmiths family is the correct line.

In 1851 the Fegussons have a daughter Jane and I suspect Johns father will be James.
after this census Jane b 1850 appears next in the Staffordshire 1881 census at this point I have no other Fergusson's Jane's parents and siblings just vanish Jane has no family on her wedding certificate other than her father is John Fergusson [Sawyer].

Are Cumnock and Old Cumnock the same place e.g. Old Cumnock surounded by the new subdivisions?

Cheers

Don't know what happened earlier  ??? ???
Your reply no 5 only had my user name a few minutes age....never mind.
Back to Cumnock/Old Cumnock - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumnock

This or its environs is where John and Christina have stated as their birthplace.

I wonder if the parents died before 1861.
There is a Jane Fergusson aged 11 on the 1861 Census in Dumfriesshire.
Her birthplace is given as Old Cumnock Ayrshire - she is listed as a servant to the householder and her occupation is nurse... :( Imagine at 11....
The family she works for lives at Mossside , Dunscore , Dumfriesshire. The family is that of a Robert Lorimer , a farmer.
I wonder if this is your ancestor??  Worth looking at?
