How to find a family from Bennettsbridge
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 12:36 BST (UK) »
I am new to this site so don't know if I have the right forum. I am trying to locate a family that would have lived in Bennettsbridge in 1947. I do not know if it was in the village or outside. I have tried various websites but a lot of records are very old (going back to 1700-1800's). I think my only chance would be Parish records but if someone can advise me or point me in the right direction to locate more up-to-date records I would be very grateful.  The family could also have some connections with Thomastown. As I am not from Kilkenny I do not know if Thomastown is near Bennettsbridge. Would there have been a hospital in Thomastown back in the 1940's does anyone know?

be careful not to post details of any living people.. not permitted on rootschat.

two possible places to check for details

If the family was in the area in 1911 they should be listed on the census - see : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

a second option would be to search the Civil Index - which is available here : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

Thomastown is about 9km south of Bennetsbridge -
see google map : http://www.rootschat.com/links/078n/

Hi Shane,

thanks for your reply. The Census is not very clear unfortunately. Too many people with the same name and surname. I will check out the familysearch.org link though.

I will be careful not to name the family. There are still family members living in the area.

Bennettsbridge has 1 't' in 1901 census
You did not specify denomination of family.
Tullaherin is the name of the Roman Catholic parish that covers village of Bennettsbridge.
Danesfort parish and St Patrick's parish cover area very close to village.
Bennettsbridge was in Danesfort parish in the 1840's

The civil parish is Treadingstown, for Griffiths Valuations

The former workhouse in Thomastown is now known as St Columbas Hospital
Currently used for Geriatic patients
