This is intended for Anne (apanderson)

I see that you have extensive information about Kilsyth kirkyard.

Might it perhaps contain something about my 4th great-grandfather James Fin(d)lay? All I know about him comes from the death certificate of his daughter Margaret, whose timeline goes like this.

1783/4 - probable birth of Margaret
1804 - Margaret Finlay in Kilsyth marries William Bryson in Cumbernauld
1808/9 - birth of daughter Elizabeth in Cumbernauld
1810/11 - birth of son Archibald in Cumbernauld
1812 - birth of son James in Cumbernauld
1815/6 - birth of son John in Cumbernauld
1817/8 - birth of son William in Cumbernauld
1823/4 - birth of daughter Christian in Cumbernauld
1826/7 - birth of son Alexander in Cumbernauld
1836 - Elizabeth Marries John Hopkins in Cumbernauld
1837 - James marries Janet Hopkins (sister of John) in Cumbernauld
1841 - William sr, Margaret, Archibald, William jr, John, Christian and Alexander at Glenhead, C'nauld
1845 - Christian marries Alexander Logan in Glasgow
1847 - John marries Margaret Baird in Old Monkland
1851 - Alexander marries Margaret Thornton in Bothwell
1851 - Margaret, widow, born Kilsyth, and Archibald at Feus, Cumbernauld
1859 - Archibald marries Janet Cousland in Denny
1861 - Archibald, Janet, son William, mother Margaret, 77, born Kilsyth, in Brand's Land, Coatbridge
1864 - Margaret dies aged 80 at Lochgreen, Falkirk, father's name given as James Findlay, millwright. No mother's name. Informant James Bryson, son
1875 - William jr marries Agnes Simpson in Kilsyth

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Forfarian,

I've raked through a pile of stuff but can't find any matches at all.

I have a page from the Burial Records for Cumbernauld Churchyard and on it there's a John Finlay (Senior), Cumbernauld, died 9th February, buried 10th February 1849, age 76.

There's a few Findlays who are listed on stones is Kilsyth, but as I said, none of the ones I have match any of your couples.

Sorry.  :(

Anne

P.S. If you want a copy of the page I referred to above, let me know.

Thanks for looking, anyway.

I have most of the information about Margaret's children, but if there's nothing on her parents in either C'nauld or Kilsyth, I suppose it will just have to remain a stone wall for ever.
