Incoming Pass Lists (Bischof)1878-1960 - look-up request
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 21:25 GMT (UK) »
Just found my (he was 60 when I was born) FATHER in 1911 census!!..at age 26.
He was born in Austria.

Does anyone have Ancestry subscription for "Incoming Passenger List 1878-1960"?..and would be kind enough to look up my father?

Herman BISCHOF, b. Austria, 1884 (census says 1885), occupation: tailor.
His fellow boarder in London was Jos. ASCHENBRENNER, (also tailor from Austria)..so maybe arrived together?

Hi

Sorry - there are no entries pre-1911 census for that name on the Ancestry UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960

I used the wildcard search as Herm** Bis** in case of mis-transcription

Thank you for trying..

Perhaps, since he "just" crossed the English Channel to get there, it was more of a "local" boat..and not subject to registering.

Most ships coming from Europe are not included on the incoming passenger lists - they were not recorded except for some which had come from outside Europe and then stopped at a European port before arriving in the UK.

Do you know where in Austria he came from?

yes, I have been able to connect to the Austrian side..but his time in England has been a blank.

The rumor is that he had a child while living in England (being an only child, this would be so exciting for me).

The only pieces of info I have is that he lived in London, then was a prisoner of war at Isle of Man during WWI.  My understanding is that German speakers were not allowed back into England after the war...(I think he went to Paris for about 10 yrs)..then to USA 1924.

Unfortunately there's not much surviving info on individual internees, but it seems there is one index that can be checked for you:
