General question of parish records info
« on: Friday 31 August 12 06:48 BST (UK) »
Hi

Just found some links to Cornwall on my wifes side and was wondering how far I can get with these.

Would a Marriage entry give fathers names and ages of couple?

Does birth entry give mothers maiden name or ages?

I am trying to find info on Thomas Hawke Thomas from Padstow (b 1819)

Parents james and ann hawke married 12/8/1813 in st Hilary (from cornwall OPC)

Many thanks and apologies if this has been answered elsewhere

Nick

Hi Nick,

Would a Marriage entry give fathers names and ages of couple?
Before 1837, it is unlikely that marriage registers contained this information. Sometimes you can get lucky and one of the witnesses can be the father, but it will not say he is. If the couple married by license, then there is a chance you can find the bond or allegation which might contain further information such as father or age.

Does birth entry give mothers maiden name or ages?
Assuming you are referring to baptisms, the answer is very rarely. Post-1837 birth certificates do give mother's maiden name. I have never known the mother's age to be found on a birth or baptism record.

However, it is always worth checking the original register because you may be lucky and find that the parish you are interested kept meticulous records.

Thanks Alexander

this is what i suspected so I may be stumped with getting a clear way back to this family

I assumed Ann Hawke would be about 20 when she married and ended up with too many possiblities for her baptism in Cornwall.

this is also the case for James Thomas.  I only got Thomas's parents marriage from his middle name.

Will have to park this avenue I guess

cheers

Been looking on the census but difficult to find on 1841 and by 1851 I think the son Thomas was in Ireland.

Always tough with names like James Thomas and Ann

James is down as a boatman on Thomas Hawke Thomas (THT) baptism so may move around?

Also on THTs coastguard records he's note as first went to sea as a boy so may have been away for the census?

Its all looking like a brick wall I think

thanks for the ideas

Found this on Google - any interest? - there are quite a few other hits, some in Cornwall

Subject: Thomas Hawke THOMAS

I am interested in what happened to a young man named Thomas Hawk(e) THOMAS,
who apparently spent almost 5 years of his life in the Hull Seaman and
General Orphanage, between 1868 and 1873. I have been told by the Archive
dept. that he worked at a locle shipbuilders and then went to sea in 1875.
It seems that he died at sea some time around 1889. Would anyone have come
across that name in their searches, or be able to lead me to find out, for
instance, the name of his vessel or the incident leading to his death, such
as a wreck or something? His father, also the same name, died in November
1867 and I am seeking his death, as I am not sure if it was in Hull or not.
it was his death which led to the child being elected to the Orphanage.
Thank you, Sandra Turner

there is no mention on the marriage entry of Ann being a minor, so she should be 21 or over. It's noted that she was of  Helston and James of Marazion, doesn't mean she was born there

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-13194-128773-76?cc=1769414&wc=MMVH-VLL:n894845455

but could be this baptism

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=baptisms&id=1742528

and these census entries, given that son was also in the coastguard

1851
Lizard Village, Landewednack HO107/1913 folio 216 pg 24
James Thomas head mar 63 coastguard b. Marazion
Ann wife 63 b. Helston

1861 Killigrew St, Falmouth RG9/1566 folio 34 pg 9
James Thomas head mar 72 late chief boatman revenus coastguard superannuated b. Marazion
Ann wife 72 b. Helston
John Crothers Thomas son mar 39 late commissioned boatman coastguard superannuated b. Padstow

baptism of son John
