Two old burials, from Walworth / Guy's Hospital London
« on: Tuesday 25 November 14 13:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi from Ireland.  I have no familiarity with London parishes, and need a hint or two about two burials that I may or may not find.

My 2nd great grandmother Harriet Hayter (nee Heady) died in Newington Workhouse in Walworth in 1886 aged just 53.  Have I any leads on where such a burial might have gone to?  Is it too early to expect any kind of burial record?

Her husband William Hayter, according to his death cert, was taken dead to Guy's Hospital from a lodging house in Harrow Street in 1903, aged 74.  Again, are there any leads where such a burial might have gone to?  Would records possibly exist?

Many thanks to any London experts out there.

It depends to some extent if the family could afford to sort out the burial themselves (in which case they may have had a family plot somewhere in one of the big London cemeteries), or not. For pauper graves, Poor Law unions often had agreements with some of the larger cemeteries to provide pauper burials, so they were not necessarily buried in the local area.  Newington Workhouse and Guys apparently both had contracts with Brookwood:

Hi KD146

Newington is now in the London Borough of Southwark and they have 2 cemeteries that could fit the bill, Camberwell Old & Nunhead

Now for the bad news, Southwark charge £18 to do look-ups, and you'll need info from them for a search at Nunhead, unless soumeone can visit Southwark local history archives for you

There's an excellent topic here, this link goes straight to #32 for more info

That was quick, many thanks.  These were almost certainly pauper burials.

I checked the Brookwood cemetery website, and of course, they lost their digitised records in a fire in 2012.  They charge £15 to do searches of the old registers.

So I have a few cemeteries to check, but looks like it will cost a few bob.

Have you any idea if 1886 and 1903 are likely to be covered in their registers?  Not too early, is it?

Many thanks.

You could try getting a free search out of Southwark & Brookwood as you are 'overseas'  ;) and not able to pay in sterling

Dawn, just a thought.  Many of those poor souls buried in 'Crossbones' in Redcross Way were from Guys.

Not too sure without googling when they stopped burying the poor there.  And although it is mainly women and children, I known that some male remains have been found there.

Fleming (Bristol) Fowler/Brain (Battersea/Bristol)    Simpson (Fulham/Clapham)  Harrison (W.London, Fulham, Clapham)  Earl & Butler  (Dublin,New Ross: Ireland)  Humphrey (All over mainly London) Hill (Reigate, Bletchingly, Redhill: Surrey)
Sell (Herts/Essex/W. London)
