Hello i believe we may be distantly related. My great grandmother was Elizabeth Gwynne - daughter of Mary. Elizabeth married a Hunter who was mother to my Gran. My sisters middle name is Dale. I am trying to find out more about the Gwynnes. I know they lived in Bank Street, Stirling (my home town)

Hi Carol,

Indeed we are!

Apologies for not replying sooner, as I haven't been on the site much and didn't get a notification of your message.

If I have the right person, your great, great grandmother Mary would have been the daughter of John Gwynne and Mary McGillivray.  John was the brother of my great, great grandmother Agnes Gwynne (1854 - 1912).  Agnes married Peter Hunter (1855 - 1926) and they were my paternal grandfather's grandparents.

I've got a bit of information on the Gwynnes, which really starts with John Gwynne's parents, James Gwynne and Elisabeth Dale [where the Dale middle name comes from :) ].  I've also got some pictures of Mary Gwynne's brothers and her husband from WWI that came from newspapers in the Stirling Library, which I'd be happy to share if you don't have copies.

I'll send you a private message with my email address and I'll be happy to share what I have.

It;s great to hear from you.

Best wishes

Brian

the above posting has been contributed to by a member of Shotts history group and confirms 15 Newmill and Canthill Road was indeed Hartwood Hospital.

He died in Hartwoodhill Hospital which is on Newmill and Canthill Road. Hartwoodhill was a little known annexe of Hartwood Hospital. I cant remember the detail but there was a rule of thumb for being in one as opposed to the other. Short term/longterm or mild / severe issues.

Google "15 Newmill and Canthill Road" and there are a few comments as to what this address was. Possibly a mental hospital and another building for older people. A few names of people who died there and cause of death.

Certainly in the 60's it was referred to as the "Hill" hospital. I remember a neighbour of mine was admitted there for a short period . Sadly he took his own life at a later date. Was definitely a "mental" institution as opposed to "Geriatric"
