Jacob Clifton (born around 1809 in Olney, Buckinghamshire)
« on: Wednesday 05 February 14 16:42 GMT (UK) »
I am currently searching for information on Jacob Clifton who was born in Olney, Bucks, around 1809. Jacob worked as a mason and married a Fanny Stimpson in Clifton Reynes in 1827. He died in 1853, possibly as a result of the injuries he sustained during the Olney Fires of that year, in which a building collapsed on him and a group of men he was working with. I am hoping someone could provide me with a more concrete birth year, and possibly the names of his parents, as all my searching hasnt brought up much at all! many thanks in advance :)!

There's a John Clifton in Olney 1841 age 45 with
Hannah 19
Horalia 15 *
Mary 7

John and Jacob could be brothers.  Doesn't help with the parents but something else to go on  :)

* whoops think it's supposed to be Horatio

The 1851 census entry for the family gives his age as 44 - which would suggest a birth in 1806/7. His place of birth is shown as Olney, so the next step needs to be checking of the local parish registers. These are available at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies in Aylesbury.

The Bucks Herald has an article (issue dated 30/7/1853) confirming his death on 26th July 1853 "in his 48th Year" which would tend confirm a birth in 1806/7. It also confirms his death as related to injuries sustained in a fire in January of that year and says "his wounds had been healed for about 4 months, but he has never rallied his strength and has sunk under his sufferings"

From the 1821 census of Olney there's a household headed by Robert Clifton, mason with only 1 male aged 40-50 and a household headed by Jonas Clifton, mason with 7 males; 1 aged 40-50, 2 aged under 5, 2 aged 5-10 & 2 more aged 10-15. One of the elder children from this latter lot could be Jacob who is born 1811 as per the 1841 census. Also that census has John age 25 and William age 21 Clifton but anc# has transcribed as Clafin ! They are masons in High Street. These could be members of Jonas Clifton's household.

From the Olney parish records the are no Clifton baptisms between 1800-1820; which would include Jacob & siblings who I am assuming are children of Jonas Clifton who is listed in 1830 Pigot's directory along with Robert Clifton as Bricklayers & Plasterers. This could be due to their religious persuasion which is recorded on the 1821 census as Baptist for Robert & Independent (=methodist?) for Jonas ( the main category is Church). However Jacob & Fanny (ne Timson) & John & Mary (ne Cross) baptised their children in the church; interestingly both had sons Jonas baptised 1841 & 1837. Also Thomas Horne & wife Judith (ne Clifton) who married in Olney 14 Oct 1834 baptised son Jonas Clifton Horne in 1835 & 1840. This Judith Horne on 1851 census was born 1815 Olney so I'm assuming she is a daughter of this Jonas Clifton. Finally Jonas Clifton was buried at Olney on 31 May 1835 aged 52.

Regards John
