Skindles Hotel, Taplow
« on: Friday 14 February 14 15:17 GMT (UK) »
According to an advertisement in 1873, George Skindle was the proprietor of Skindles Hotel.

According to the 1881 census, Henry Hoare (born London 1838/9, died 19 November 1924, death registered in Eton registration district) was the proprietor. In 1891 he was described as 'hotel keeper', and in 1891 he was 'retired hotel keeper'.

He married Margaret Ann Keith (1842 - 1875) in Edinburgh in 1867, and they had five children: Margaret (1867 - 1955); Mary (1868 - 1934) (m John Henry Caudell in 1895); Harry (1870 - 1897); Louisa b and d 1872; Alfred b 1873.

Does anyone know exactly when Henry Hoare became the proprietor of Skindles Hotel? It must have been after his wife's death in 1875, because she died in Edinburgh, and before the 1881 census.

And was it this Alfred Hoare who died in  aged 18 in Devon St Thomas 1891, March quarter, Vol 5b, Page 47?

HI

Skindles was previously known as The Orkney Arms

http://pubshistory.com/Buckinghamshire/Taplow/OrkneyArmsHotel.shtml
listing "_Lewis" as the proprietor in 1877.

Thanks, Ray. That narrows down the date when Henry acquired it - if indeed he was the proprietor rather than a manager.

Hi

Looking at the same website 1895 still lists HH but not 1898

Thanks again, Ray. That fits with the census data.
