Please Help Me Stop Banging My Head Against A Brick Wall !
« on: Saturday 03 March 12 12:02 GMT (UK) »
Finally ( and once again ), I appeal to the "Rootschat " members to give me your thoughts, regarding our family tree.
The family surname is MEREDITH.
Charles Meredith married a lady by the name of Agnes Hartley, they had several children late 1800's early 1900's, who were placed into various care homes.
Rightly or Wrongly, they then had from 1908 five more children, Maud, Lil, May, Samuel and Rose.
My poser is this, all these children had on the birth certificate the father down as Charles Meredith and the mother down as Agnes Meredith formerly Hartley, except Samuel ?
He had the same address 28 Hazelhurst Road, Wandsworth, sub district of Streatham as the last of the children Rose does, BUT, his fathers name is down as William MERIDITH, not Charles Meredith and his mother is down as Agnes Meredith formerly Dunn.
Surely these cannot just be odd errors there are too many !?
The fathers occupation on each is in the Print Industry, but I smell a cover up and cannot see a link, I wonder if anyone can see who and the reason why ?

regards

Hi,

Who was the informant for Samuel?  If it was Charles he might have given the name of his father;  do you know if it was William?   Although that would not explain the other surname for Agnes.     :-\

If Samuel's birth is on Ancestry, it may be worth checking other births registered on the same day for a father William and a mother's maiden surname Hartley, just in case there was a mix up when writing the entries into the register.  :-\

Thanks, Nanny Jan and Ruskie,
The informant on both Samuel and Rose's birth certificates say, A. Meridith, mother and the address, on Samuel's and A Meredith, mother and the same address.
The registrar on Samuels 1914, is Charles T ? Smith and on Rose's in 1916 as Hilda C Smith interim registrar,
( possibly the wife ).
On Mauds birth certificate 1907, it has the informant as C Meredith, Father, and the father as Charles Meredith and Mother as Agnes Meredith formerly Hartley.
On Mauds marriage lines in 1927 her fathers name was Charles Meredith.
On Lils marriage lines in 1929 her fathers name was William Charles.
The fathers full name was Charles William so I can see there may have been a mistake putting William on Samuels birth certificate but why the change of spelling as Meridith and the mothers maiden name as Dunn ??
regards

The difference is spelling of the surname is irrelevant (it's obviously the same name with just a slight spelling variation). It's the maiden surname Dunn rather than Hartley that is puzzling.

Hi
Perhaps she was illegitimate, and her mother married, and she used both name's, this as happened in my tree.

Hi Ruskie,
I agree, as the father was Charles William Meredith a mistake could have been made on birth certificate stating William instead of Charles, but as you say why the mothers maiden name change from Hartley to Dunn is baffling.
On my original page, I said the parents had children that were in care, Henry, Charles, Sarah, Kathleen, Richard, Agnes, Elizabeth, Patrick and Hannah....I wondered if the daughter Agnes had had a child ( she was living at a home at Liverpool ), perhaps took the name Dunn and came home to her parents and had the child ( Samuel ) ?
The mother Agnes Hartley/Meredith finally died in 1924 when Samuel and Rose were very young ( 10, 8 ).
After bearing so many children it was no wonder !
