John Evans - Is it hopeless?
« on: Tuesday 10 June 14 18:16 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for some help in finding John who was born in Llanedwen, Anglesey on or about 8 April 1875.

Last seen he was at Penrhyn Gardens, Bangor (shown as the Head Gardener). At that time he was single aged 35.

I wondered if Penrhyn Gardens have records relating to their staff? Does anyone know?

On his mothers death in 1917 John was still a Gardener but no trace of him since then.

I would like to find out what happened to him.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Alan

Is Penrhyn Gardens the Gardens of Penrhyn Castle? If so the papers of the Penrhyn Estate are archived at Bangor University. Details of access to the collections can be found on the archives web site:

Hi,

Thank you Jennifer C and Dolgellau for your quick responses.

John was not the informant on his mothers death certificate (so the last address I have for him was the 1911 census).

I am assuming that Penrhyn Gardens are the Gardens of Penrhyn Castle and a quick look at the University web site tells me they have manuscripts of Penrhyn Castle. A trip to Bangor may provide the answers I am looking for.

Many thanks

Alan

Penrhyn Castle is now run by the National Trust and the staff there are very helpful. You could try ringing them. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/penrhyn-castle/
If John remained in the area till he died it's possible he may be buried in Llandegai churchyard which has a few members of Penrhyn staff buried there.
