Where were the Flax Workers from Co. Mayo in the mid 1800's?
« on: Sunday 19 October 14 01:16 BST (UK) »
I had family that were working in flax mills in the mid 1800's in Co. Mayo.  when the factories were closed in the 1847-1850 time period, a lot of workers emigrated to Leeds, England.  Would anyone know where in Co. Mayo these workers would have come from.  Trying to narrow down my research to these towns.
Any help or suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.
Mary

flax growers list Co. Mayo

See "Land and popular politics in Ireland: Co. Mayo.." on  this list of links  (3rd down)

"Mayos principal towns grew and prospered in response to the linen trade.  Castlebar, Ballina, Westport, Newport all bustled with linen related industries".
