Hi, back again.

Concerning your PM: Edward being Edmund.

1841 Census
HO107/489/1 Schedule 12 Page 30
Turnpin Lane (Greenwich Market)

Wm Couldery, 40, Butcher
Ann do, 35
Ann do, 15?
Frederick, 15, apr (there looks to be an 'm' in the colum next to 15)
Charlotte do, 13
Edmund do, 8
Emily do, 3
Clara do, 1
(all the aforementioned are bracketed)
Richard Jackson, 45, M.S.
Charlotte Rutland, 25, F.S.
James Hubbard, 15, M.S.

All born in Kent

An Edmund Couldery of the right age died in Lewisham in 1905 Dec. 1d 668).

The 1901 Census (RG13/545 Folio 146 Page 11) has the following entry at 45 High Street, Lee, Lewisham:

Edmund Couldery, Head, S, 67, Retired Schoolmaster, b. Greenwich Kent
James Watts, Companion, S, 45, Retired Tutor school, b. Ashford Devon
Plus a couple of female servants.

So, working back from there...

1891 Census
RG12/517 Folio Page 6
Blackheath College for Boys
45 High Street, Lee

Edmund Couldery, Head, (Condition as to marriage SOS? SAS? SS?), 54, Proprietor of School, b. Kent Greenwich
James Watts, Tutor, S, 35, Tutor in School, b. Devonshire Ashford
Alfred Lawler, Tutor, S, 28, Tutor in School, b. Gosport Hampshire
Plus about 40 boy pupils and 6 servants.

1881 Census
RG11/730 Folio 73 Page 5
Granville House, Lee, Kent

Edmund Couldrey, Head, U, 44, Greenwich Kent, Schoolmaster
James Watts, Boarder, U, 25, Devon , Assistant Schoolmaster
Algernon G Da Silva, U, Boarder, 23, New Zealand, Assistant Schoolmaster
Plus about 46 boy pupils and 6 servants.

1861 with birthdate around 1836 were Edmund and Emily:

RG9/414 Schedule 4 Page 1
Mount Granville House, Granville Grea...? (the future addresses were next to Granville Rd)

Edmund Couldery, Head, Un, 25, Schoolmaster, b. Kent Greenwich
Emily do, Sister, Un, 22, Housekeeper, do do
Plus 9 boy boarders

I can't find an Edward or Edmund Couldery (or variations thereof) in 1871.

Many thanks Dimps.

According to the IGI, William and Ann had three more sons who should be in the 1841 census:

George Benjamin Alexander, b. 09 Jun 1821, chr. 04 Jul 1821 at St Alphage, Greenwich.
Charles, b. 28 May 1826, chr. 21 Jun 1826 at St Alphage, Greenwich.
Henry, b. 12 Jul 1829, chr. 02 Aug 1829 at St Alphage, Greenwich.

Can you find them please? I did find Henry in the 1841 index at Ancestry but I need the household details. Likewise, I found George in 1861. Also, I found George's marriage to Elizabeth Glover at FreeBMD - reg. Q2 1865 at Bethnal Green.

Thanks.

1841 Census
HO107/489/19 Schedule 20 Page 8
Union Workhouse, Greenwich

Henry Couldery, 13, Pauper, b. Kent

1861 Census
RG9/417 Folio Page 22
Perry Hill, Catford
(Municpal Ward Sydenham, Ecc. Parish Christ Church Forest Hill)

George Trickett(?), Head, Mar, 73, Retired Steward, b. Yorkshire ...?
Patience do, Wife, Mar, 74, b. Herts South Mimms
George do, Son, Unm, 34, Commercial Agent, b. Nottinghamshire Inn Green(?)
George Couldery, Boarder, Unm, 39, Clerk, b. Kent Greenwich

In 1871 (RG10/758 Folio 32 Page 28) at 1 Kitson's Terrace, Newcastle Street, Greenwich (as far as I can work out, close to The Dome) were:

George Carter, Head, 49, Waterman, b. Kent Greenwich
Elizabeth do, Wife, 49, b. London Bethnal Green

and children: Henry (19, Waterman); Eliza (17); Alice (14); Clara (12); Alfred (10) - all born in Greenwich.

The Carter family are still there 10 years later, so very probably just coincidence.

Thanks Dimps. The IGI has a George Tricketts who married Patience Lawrence 6 Jun 1825 in Grove, Nottingham. And they had a son, George, who was christened 8 Aug 1826 in Lenton, Nottingham.  I don't think George Couldery was related to them.

Hi WG - Thanks for the PM.

The 1846 George appears to be here in 1871:

RG10/755 Folios 45/46 Pages 41/42
6 Maidenstone Hill, Greenwich

Mary Ann Powell, Head, W, 58, Annuitant, Kent Greenwich
Charles Ackland, Brother, Unm, 50, Coachman Unemployed, Kent Greenwich
Arthur George Powell, Son, Unm, 22, Railway Carriage Cleaner, birthplace a bit confusing because it looks like Middx (ie. Middlesex) do
Maria Bush, Visitor, Unm, 22, Domestic Servant Unemployed, Surrey Kennington (? - very much a guess from what I can read)
Frank do, Visitor, Unm, 16, Page Unemployed, do do
George Couldery, Lodger, Unm, 25, Railway Porter, Kent Greenwich

Pictures of Maidenstone Hill in the 1970s can be found here:

Thanks Dimps.  I believe this is George Daniel Couldery, son of William Andrew Couldery and Eleanor Desmond who were married in Greenwich Q1 1844.  George married Emma Corlotta Aggett in Greenwich, Q3 1877. I found them in the 1881 census (mis-spelled CAULDEY) at 5 Theed Street, Lambeth, Surrey. There are no children with them in 1881. Can you please check 1891 and 1901. I'd like to know where they lived and if they ever had children. Emma was born in Drewsteignton, Devon about 1846 and died in Greenwich about Dec 1905. George died in Greenwich about Dec 1901.

Thanks.

1891 Census
RG12/367 Folio 83 Page 32
10 Heygate Street, Walworth (Elephant & Castle)

George and Emma make up one of four households within this dwelling, occupying one room.

George Couldery, Head, 44, General Labourer, b. Kent Greenwich
Emma do, Wife, 44, Dressmaker, b. Devon Drewsteignton

1901 Census RG13/537 Folio 29 Page 49
113 King George Street, Greenwich

George Couldrey, Head, 54, Railway Porter, Kent Greenwich
Emma do, Wife, 55, Devonshire Drewstanton

Theed St.  would appear to be a street of warehouses that are now very expensive "loft" apartments, offices and so on.  See who is at 5 Theed St. these days:

Tee-hee.
