Address - 105 Grassmarket, Edinburgh 1871 - what is it?
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 23:29 BST (UK) »
I have a relative located at this address in 1871 census.  There are 70-80 people at the same address, ranging from children to 60 yo.  Most of the adults seem to have work - dressmaker, joiner, labourer etc.
I thought it might have been a poor house/workhouse, but as most of the adults have an occupation I now doubt it.

Does anyone know what it might have been at that stage?

Hi,
I wonder if this is the building  http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/sc-28943-98-grassmarket-and-105-west-bow-/photosis
Looby  :)

Added - Being a tenement building it would be split into numerous small flats which would house a lot of people.

Looking at the PO directory for that period 105 was situated on the South side around Gilmore Close (which was once 101).  Map available at the NLS site for that period.

The current building was built in c1879.
