Help with location name in Melrose Parish
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 17:32 GMT (UK) »
I have found an 10/10/1845 marriage record for Melrose (Parish or County?) but I cannot make out the location the groom was from.  It looks like "Andrew Scott in the Island Parish of Melrose".  The word that bothers me is "Island" and I assume I have read it incorrectly.  I'm guessing that it is a village or farm within the Parish of Melrose so perhaps the I is a J or an S or something?  What is it and where is it?

all help welcomed.

Hi,

If you could post the relevant section (without posting the entire image for copyright reasons) we could have a look. I can’t think of anything else that would look like Island so my guess would be it does say Island. The Island would be referring to the area now known as Island Street, Galashiels. This section of Galashiels was once in Melrose Parish.

You may find this explanation helpful: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=160521.0

I notice by 1861 Andrew and Helen are living in Ladhope parish, Galashiels: http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/61transcript.aspx?houseid=799203058

I've been trying all sorts of ways to attach or copy in a section of the marriage registration talked about but when I preview my new replies they never work. I'll try posting the reply and see if it attaches? No laughing allowed.

Hi Merv,

I would say it is Island, which means he was living the vicinity of where Island Street is now. This means Andrew was living in the town of Galashiels but the Parish of Melrose; which was in the county of Roxburghshire in 1845. Helen was living in the parish of Galashiels, which is in the county of Selkirkshire.

Interestingly the OPR marriages for Galashiels parish, for this time period, are missing and are therefore not searchable on scotlandspeople. There are however marriages found amongst the Kirk Session records of Galashiels Parish for the period 1845-1854.

Marriage Banns were proclaimed in the parishes of each party, if both lived in the same parish they appear in one parish; however as in your case if they lived in different parishes they appear twice. Here is the transcription from the Galashiels register for you:

Date Booked; Man: Name and Parish; Woman: Name and Parish; Cautioners; Marriage Date; Remarks

1845 Septr. 27; Andrew Scott, Melrose; Helen Hutton, Galashiels; Jas. Hutton & Alexr. Johnston; 2

(The two in the remarks column indicates on how many separate days they were proclaimed.)
