Moon, St Winnow/Gorran - trying to confirm family trees
« on: Tuesday 02 September 14 17:51 BST (UK) »
I've managed to trace back the Cornish part of my family fairly confidently to Henry Moon, basketmaker, born in St Winnow somewhere around 1800. (He appears with his wife Grace on the 1841 census, HO 107/145/2 Dist 11, pg 4, as well as later ones.)

A number of online family trees have his father as another Henry Moon, born 1767 and his wife Ann Tambling. (1841 HO 107/153/20 Dist 2 pg 7) He's also a basketmaker, there's nothing to contradict it that I can see, but I can't find any records that actually confirm it. Is there anybody who knows Cornish records better than I do who can help definitely one way or the other? Thank you for any help you can give me.

I must admit I haven't asked, I haven't had a lot of luck getting responses in the past, but I could try, at least.

Thank you jan57 - that's handy to know.

extracted records from FamilySearch

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N5S5-6QQ son of Henry

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N5S5-6Q4 son of John

There's a burial in St Winnow of a Henry Moon aged 25, 10 Jan 1825 of Penryn which doesn't really help to work out which one is which.

Do you have a copy of the parish marriage of Henry & Grace to see who the witnesses are? That might help.

Thank you - I don't know whether to be frustrated that there is no easy answer or comforted that at least I questioned it.

Unfortunately, I have Grace's name confirmed from a child's baptism, rather than the marriage, so I don't have any access to the witnesses.

there's a marriage in St Winnow 25 March 1818 of Henry Moon & Grace Udy. As Grace was older than Henry, it could be that she had been married previously. Is this the baptism ? Shows her as child of John & Ann Brokenshire.

Sorry about the delay in replying, I had an unexpected family visit for several days.

Yes, that was the baptism that I have, but I hadn't found that marriage.

The only Grace Udy I've found was born 1792, but was still apparently married to Richard Udy in 1861, according to the census. Somebody on Ancestry also cites that Grace Udy/Henry Moon marriage, but doesn't give the actual records - is there a source online?

Thank you for looking.

the scanned FamilySearch records for Cornwall doesn't cover St Winnow marriages at the moment

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1769414

I think I found the marriage on an index. The opc may have the marriages on film to check
http://www.cornwall-opc.org/Par_new/t_z/winnow_st.php

or you could get a copy the archives in Truro
http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/community-and-living/records-archives-and-cornish-studies/enquiry-and-copy-services/

not all records are online, so there could be another Grace out there.
