probate inventory 1889
« on: Sunday 19 October 14 18:52 BST (UK) »
I have an Albert Symes who died in Stratford Essex in 1889. I have a copy of his will which leaves his entire estate to his wife without detailing the estate. This estate was reasonably large and I would love to find out any details of the makeup of the estate particularly as Albert has a bit of a rags to riches story. There would have been a probate inventory I guess? Is this likely to have survived? If so any clues about where I might start to look for it?

He left over £3,500, equal to over £210,000 now

It may be worth looking in the newspapers to see if any of the Estate was sold off. I was in a similar position with greatgrandfather's will in 1858, it simply named the beneficiaries with no detail.  I believed he simply owned a bakery, but I then found and advertisement for the sale of the business and discovered he also owned a large Georgian house, as well as twenty other properties and some land. Without the discovery of that advertisement, I would never have discovered so much information.

I can't express too strongly, how newspapers can reveal an amazing amount about even the most humble of our ancestors.
