Help to date a picture please!
« on: Saturday 13 September 14 21:04 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm sure there was a specific board for this but I can't seem to find it, I hope its ok here!

We're hoping that this is my husbands GG Grandparents but it all rides on the date, any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would guess mid 1920s to early 1930s (based on very similar photos of my own family).

Men's suits were like that 1930-1950ish, but given the lady's hat and dress I would say late 1920's or early 1930's.

Thank you both, this is what we suspected and leads me to my second question....

Same man or Uncle & nephew?

Thanks again
Jo

Lady's outfit is very 1920's - clearly a follower of fashion!

The man in the first photo has prominent ears, but the man in the later photo doesn't.

That's what my husband pointed out. When I first looked I said not the same man but then after a closer inspection I do think that there is a lot of similarity around the mouth.

Due to the annotations on the photo's we know that they are both called Tom Marsden but older Tom didn't have a son called Tom which left us two options, same man or nephew!

The 2nd photo is dated 1930 on the back which would fit with Tom senior being 74 at that time but the dating of the photo of the younger Tom doesn't fit with it being the same person.

I am going to see if I can find a nephew of the same name!

About 1922-1930 if the lady is up to date. What's on the back, is it a postcard? And could we see all of the front uncropped please, showing the outer corners?

Cheers,

Thanks China, the original is attached although its still only a photo of a photo, its only a small pic 2" x 3" maybe and there is nothing on the back - here's the story:

My hubby's GG Grandfather was Tom Marsden b 1855 (July(ish)) in Leeds.

The photo's which we were shown yesterday we're owned by his G Grandson (my husbands uncle) who had no idea who he was and was only is possession of the photo's as they had been handed down.

As you can see the first pic is "Tom Marsden & wife" but as we have now established a 1920/30 time frame for this pic we can be pretty sure its not GG Grandfather Tom.

The second pic is actual dated 1930 and says "Granddad Marsden" on the back - even though it doesn't actually state Tom it's fairly clear that this is who it is.

All pics were annotated by Tom's daughter in law (Gladys nee Ried) as his uncle recognises the handwriting.

I have looked at all Tom's brothers in the hope of finding a nephew also called Tom but alas there is not one - my question is now "Who the devil is Tom Marsden & Wife?"

Hope that all makes sense
