Is it possible to say when this nurse had her picture taken?
« on: Friday 19 September 14 14:49 BST (UK) »
I think she might be my great aunt Ellen ("Aunty Nellie") Roberts. Born in Llysfain in 1886; in 1911 she is living with her mother Barbara in Hereford with occupation 'Domestic Nurse'.  There is something odd about her footwear unless it's a trick of the light.  If the photo is too recent to be her it might be my Aunty Barbara Doughty, born in Woolwich in 1903 but there is no record of her having been a nurse. There is no record of any war service for either of them.  Thanks

(Please forgive me if I don't acknowledge any responses quickly as I will be travelling quite a lot)

My first thought was Red Cross nurse too.  I don't think there's anything wrong with her shoes, just a trick of the light on a highly polished shoe.

If the lady is Ellen born in 1886 then she would be late teens or twenties in the photo putting it 1900-10 which would be about right. If it were Aunty Barbara then the photo would have to be taken 1923 onwards. Either is possible but I'm inclined towards Ellen.

Regards

AJ

Many thanks. There is a very interesting attachment on dating uniforms in the site Carol sent and according to this the 'handkerchief style' hat was introduced in 1915. If this is Ellen this would make her about 30 which I suppose is just about possible.

Thanks Carol. I'll take a look at the medal records. She never married and my sister recalls that she worked as a home nurse in later life.   She does remember her but only as an older person so she cannot be sure it is her from the photo.
