The corners are square Carol...  it's the jacket that's throwing me off too.  All the men in this family look so alike it's hard to work out which one is which.

I'll be interested in Jim's opinion too  ;D

Hi Jenny, the 2 comparison photos do have a remarkable similarity don't they.  My only thought on the negative numbers is that perhaps each branch had their own set of numbers ???

We'll wait for Jim  ;D

Well my opinion is 1860's & this is a later reprint c.early 1870's.
He looks about 14/15.
The clothing could be 1860's or 70's as styles didn't change much but styles in photography did.
The full length image with the use of a posing stand is typical of the 1860's & you wouldn't see many photos like this in the 70's.

The boys eyebrows seem to be very fine and fair, while the older man has heavy dark eyebrows.  This would suggest to me that they are not the same person.

;D thank you Jim, I think that settles it.

It's not grandpa, I had my doubts which is why I wanted to get a second and third or more opinions.

That sweet little boy went on to be a surgeon like his father.

CC, the genes are very strong in this family and they all look the same, they start off very fair then go darker.

Thank you everyone :)

Dang, Jim beat me to it...that'll teach me to have a life away from the keyboard ;D Hi Jenny :)

That posing stand had pretty well gone by the mid 1870s but this one is very blatant, no attempt to hide it at all. The blank backdrop and the curtain are also so very 1860s. Not too sure about this being a reprint but if you only have the two family members to choose between it doesn't much matter...it's not Granddad :)

Cheers,

Hi China  ;D

Thanks China  ;D  I did see the posing stand but wasn't sure of the dates for them.

Yes, only two boys to chose from. They only had one surviving sister, Mary Angela (I put up a query on a mourning locket last week that was gifted to her) and I'm pretty sure its not Mary Angela  ;D The other 4 girls all died before the age of 4.  The remaining 3 possible male cousins all lived in Ireland.

I guess that's a full house opting for Charles  ;D

Jenny

ps just scanning my way through 3 albums that belonged to my MIL! she kept them well hidden from me
