Was Mile Oak Meadow a care home?
« on: Saturday 05 April 14 11:49 BST (UK) »
I've just received a death certificate from 1960. The chap who died lived in Fulham, London all his life but died at Mile Oak Meadow in Washington, Sussex. An internet search hasn't given me any links as to what MOM was although I'm assuming it's a care home type place. But if so, I'm wondering why he moved to Sussex when his remaining family (that I know of) were still in London. Does anyone have any local knowledge of Washington in the 1950s/60s who may be able to help me identify what Mile Oak Meadow was?

Many thanks
Paula

Not being a lot of help but he could just have been out for the day when he died.

Who was the informant, did it give an address for them too.

The informant was his son, who lived in London. My chap died on 13th Feb 1960, which according to an old calender was a Saturday. It's possible they were on a day out but his cause of death was lobar pneumonia which I would assume takes a little while to cause death. But I suppose they could have been for a visit a few days before. The death certificate states he had a postmortem with no inquest.

Looking at the cause of death, could he have been sent to a convalescent home, I know a lot of people from London were sent into the country to recover after operations etc?

There were lots of small 'rest homes' around and about Washington and the surrounding villages.  Many were simply large houses with maybe two or three 'guests'.  Owing to new regulations many of the people who ran these small enterprises have had to close.

It could be that this was one of those and as groom says he may have been sent down to Sussex for some fresh air but sadly passed away.
