Brickiest of Brick Walls! Stephen Webb - Odiham
« on: Tuesday 18 September 12 21:29 BST (UK) »
Hi folks. Wondering if you can help. I am looking for the birth record of my great grandfather. His name was Stephen Webb and according to the 1911 census, he was born in Odiham in Hampshire. We have his marriage record, marrying Celia Patience Walker in 1908 in Buckinghamshire but know nothing of his life prior to this. On his marriage certificate it states he was a widower. It also states his father is John Webb, deceased. We have got Stephens death certificate, dying in Charndon in Buckinghamshire, witnessed by his wife Celia. Conflicting information of all of these records place his birth between 1856 and 1865. We have failed to find any record of Stephen prior to 1908 and with no connection between him and his father, John, it is impossible to ensure that we are picking the correct John Webb if we take this back further. There are a few options of Stephen Webb's on census's / family search etc, but we have managed to discount most if not all of these. Any help would be much appreciated as we have been looking into him for a couple of years now with no luck.

If anyone has a Stephen Webb born around this time that may be correct, then please let us know! Also any other suggestions / name variations etc, would be useful. He is only my great grandfather so it really shouldn't be this hard!!

Thanks

Kay ???

Ray - thanks for your response and time taken. We have come across the Goray's before and got quite interested in this but managed to discount it. Can't 100% remember the logic which we discounted this on but I will dig out this info tomorrow and post my logic on here. Thanks.

Have a look at freeBMD - 2nd quarter 1866

Sarah Webb married John Gorey Southampton 2c/69

but there is a Stephen (Hide) Webb born 1861, married 1883 and died 1922 all in Southampton

Hi Folks - thank you all for your help.

Margp - Stephen was employed as an ag lab in Marsh Gibbon in Buckinghamshire and later as a bricklayers labourer.

Derek - we have come across Sarah Webb and John Goray before and I believe we have discounted but I am still trying to dig through my notes to work out why!

We have discounted Stephen Hide Webb as you mention, he dies in 1922 and we know that our man dies in 1915.

Shirl - Thanks for the link. I have just had a look at it and te website doesn't look familiar so I will dig around and see what I can find! I have been down to Hampshire and looked at the Odiham parish records but with no success but we will keep trying!

Thanks all for your assistance.

Derek - no, we have not managed to find his first marriage as we have little to go on. We only found that he had been married previously as he was a widower on his marriage certificate in 1908. Whether his first wife had actually died by this point is another question!! His (assumed) 2nd wife, Celia Patience Walker does have three children in the Buckinghamshire area (Marsh Gibbon) prior to her marriage to Stephen, all who have the surname Walker. Whether Stephen Webb had anything to do with any of these children is unknown.
