Eyeling, Middlesex
« on: Friday 04 April 14 07:34 BST (UK) »
I have an old Will - 1748 - where Eyeling, Middlesex is mentioned. Where is this? I suppose it might be Ealing but as the family was from Stepney and surrounds this does not seem likely to me. [I'm not that familiar with London [Aussie]].
Does anyone have any ideas?

Ealing is what I first thought too, but it's not very close to Stepney. In what context was Eyeling mentioned in the will?

Hi, I think I posted this in the wrong forum  - sorry! However,  it was mentioned in the first sentence as the place the Will's testator, Elizabeth Demetrius, was from.

Boundaries may have changed too, so what was Midlesex then, may not be Middlesex now.
Have you tried tracing Elizabeth? Her surname sounds Greek - maybe she married Mr Demetrious?  :)

No charmer from the Greek Isles for her, she was a spinster. I'm sorry I spelled her surname incorrectly in the post. She was more than likely from the Demetrius family [De Meter[en] who were Dutch emigrants to London from the 1500's.

Ah, OK then?  :) proximity to Stepney is probably irrelevant if she was the testator anyway.

Ealing is local to us.
The current spelling became the norm in the early 19th century. Have seen various spellings from earlier - Yling being one, but haven't seen Eyeling before, but seems close enough to be a possibility.
Would need more background info to be sure.

The Demetrius family, in general, lived in Spitalfields and St Dunstan Stepney, Ratcliffe and close surrounds. The spelling used for Eyeling is Eyling in another case in the Will [it is not the original but the later archived Court of Canterbury transcriptions]. Eliz. does leave a legacy to a yeoman of Eyeling, which suggests a more rural area, so probably Ealing is where she was. Thanks for your responses. :)
