***COMPLETED*** Anyone know what became of Burt Terrace, Gateshead?
« on: Friday 19 September 14 16:13 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootsters,

I'm planning to trip to Tyne and Wear and am trying to find some places but google map has drawn a blank so wonder if anybody can help.

I'm after Burt Terrace, Gateshead (1881); Morlandine Street, Gateshead (1878); and High Street Marshall's Entry, Gateshead (1841).

(I've already got Jackson Street (1861-1871) and Charles Street (1855).

Thanks in hope,

Thanks Kau, that's one down - sort of! And thankfully it's on one of the maps I'd already printed.

only two to go (though I do have several in South Shields......)

Morlandine Street, Gateshead (1878);

I think that should be Molendine Terrace. In the 1881 census it is in the area bounded on the north by Ellison Street, east by High Street, south by Jackson Street, and west by West Street. You can see it on the 1858 Town Plan at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=425576,563098

There is a Marshall's Yard, off High Street, which you can see on the 1858 Town Plan at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=425658,563138 just above Jackson Street. It is just along from Molendine Terrace.

Hi Stan,

Thanks for that also, I have rechecked the death cert for my GGGGrandfather and he did indeed die of 'Excessive use of spirts and apoplexy' in Molendine Terrace in 1878. Top relie!

Thanks again!

Hi again Stan and even more thanks!  I think that's the lot for Gateshead and now I just need to find them in the flesh!

Many thanks,

Transactions of the Obstetrical Society of London

1876: REDMOND, Charles Stennett, L.K.Q.C.P.I. (sic), 30, Molendine
Terrace, Jackson Street, Gateshead.

On the 1881 Census he was at the same address and was a Physician and Surgeon. The Terrace must have been quite exclusive.
