Frederick Brown   33  Bootmaker   Huntindon

Intererestingly he is living next door to William and Francis Batchelor. William, a blacksmith, was born in Lindfield. I wonder if he was Eliza's brother?

The 1881 address though part of Cuckfield is in fact Haywards Heath. Triangle Terrace is still there in Triangle Road.

I can't spot a marriage either.

The Eliza E J Brown in 1891 is Eliza Emma Jane Brown her daughter. Her baptism at St Wilfrid's Haywards Heath gives a birthdate of 6th June 1874 yet she didn't get baptised until 8 April 1890, father is given as Frederick William Brown shoemaker. There's no baptism for her older brother.

There's also a burial for an Eliza Brown aged 67 on 18 Aug 1897 at St Wilfrids, no burial for Frederick though nor any death registered for him in Cuckfield registration district between 1881 and 1891.

Many thanks to Groom and Jill on the A272. Most of the information you have given me I already knew. Frederick and Eliza were my Great Grandparents and Frederick William Brown is my Grandfather. My problem is I cannot find any birth or death details for Frederick, or any marriage details for Frederick and Eliza. Yes William Batchelor is Eliza's brother, in fact she was a witness on their marriage under her first married name of Knight, Frederick was her second marriage. The Batchelors are a big Sussex family and I have traced them back as far as the 16th century, it is the Brown side where I am having problems, and have only so far found reference to Frederick in 1871 and 1891 census'. I would be grateful for any other information on him.

I think the problem you may have is that it doesn't look as if they actually married, she just took his name. That means that without a marriage certificate you don't know Frederick's father's name, which makes it harder to find him in the earlier censuses.

Another problem is that he was born right at the start of birth registrations, so may not have been registered, in which case you need to see if you can find a baptism. I can't see one on FamilySearch or Freereg. I also can't see him in the 1841 or 1851 census.
