There was the Deaf and Dumb Institution Edinburgh at number 54, next to the Academy.
Named changed and merged I believe with Donaldsons Hospital.     Check out  Jean Brodie links.

Will ask a friend who went there and now works there at the end of the school day.

The Academy was used as a backdrop for "The Marcia Blane" school for girls
in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie but i'm sure you are looking for a real one ! ;D

The building looks promising. My mother who died many years ago went to a small private school for girls but she was not deaf or dumb. I am not sure whether it was primary, secondary or both. She was born in 1921 so it must have been from around 1926 to 1938.

Have you tried contacting Edinburgh Academy to ask if anyone there has any knowledge of this School?

Is it possible to look at census records for a street rather than a name at Scoctlands People? I think the school was at Dundas Street end of Henderson row before you get to Academy.

22 Henderson Row sounds right. Where did you find out about it? I would love to find out more about it.

Early 20c PO Directory at http://addressinghistory.edina.ac.uk/search.jsp  although I would be inclined to contact the Edinburgh Room at the Central Library Edinburgh for a more precise year directory look up.

There  are a number of reference books at the Edinburgh Room listing various Education establishments over the years.
