Carholme Road Lincoln
« on: Thursday 29 May 14 13:59 BST (UK) »
As a first time user please excuse me if I am posting this in the wrong place and point me in the right direction!  I was born in 1964 at 128 Carholme Road lincoln.  We moved out when I was 1 and the house has since been demolished (It stood where Jack Machins motorbike shop currently stands!) I know the house was built somewhere between 1932 & 1939 but don't know when it was knocked down.  I have been to the Library, checked Lincs to the Past and Lincoln City Council trying to research the history of the house and, in an ideal world, find a photo - all to no avail.  Can anyone help me with this?  I would love to know when it was built and for whom, when it was demolished and as I said I would love to find a photo.  Any details however small would help me enormously.  Thanks

www.francisfrith.com has over 160 photos of old Lincoln, you may strike lucky with one of them.  Is it any use trying Land Registry for information, or even talking to the person who now occupies the plot who may know something helpful.

Thanks for that Nottschick!  I have spoken to the current occupier but it has changed hands several times since I lived there and they don't know anything.  Just need someone who has lived in the area for a while really who might remember.  Will try the Francis Frith site!! :)

It looks like you might have to pick a nice warm day, take a picnic and go from door to door.  Good luck.

Looking at the 1932 map and the 1968-1971 maps at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=496463,371624  it seems there has never been a house at the corner of Carholme Road and Derwent Street where Jack Machins motorbike shop is, as the same buildings are shown on each map.

It was built sometime between 1932 & 1939 and I have just found out that it was demolished in 1971 so I think it had been & gone between the 2 maps you were looking at Stan! Have you got access to any between these periods?  Thanks for your help!

This is from the 1938 map, similar to the other maps.

I think (and I may be wrong!!) that the small shaded square to the front & right of that plot that is on the corner is the house. Will ask my brother as he remember the house!  Thanks again.

Carholme Garage was between Saul and Derwent streets, as was No.128 (Mrs Brookes in 1957 directory).
