Surrey Marriage Licences.
« on: Tuesday 19 August 14 21:53 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Have recently come across the marriage records on Ancestry of both my 4x great grandparents & my 5x gt grandparents. The couples in question being:

4x gt grandparents.

Sarah Searle & William Kelsey who married on 18th June 1803 at St Mary's Church, Horne, Surrey.

5x gt grandparents.

John Searle & Elizabeth Doubell who married on 10th May 1780 at St Peter's Church, Tandridge, Surrey.

Both marriages were by licence. Do marriage licence records exist & if so where would I find them?

I believe that both churches are in the Southwark Diocese, whether this helps or not I don't know, as I haven't used these records before!

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

There is an index to Surrey Marriage licences plus images available on Ancestry.  I can't remember the exact title of the database, but look under parish records for Surrey and it should be listed.

The records on ancestry are showing a FHL library film number.  You should be able to order in the film to your local LDS family history centre

I've viewed actual marriage licences at my Local Record Office.

For the area you want, that would be the Surrey History Centre -Woking I think? A google will find it. I've been there once, though wasnt after marriage licences on that occasion.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi Rosie99 & Lizdb,

Many thanks indeed for your replies, very much appreciated indeed.

Surrey History Centre is somewhere I need to go at some point, so will make a note to check out as to whether they have marriage licences there or not. My local LDS family history centre is also another place worth keeping in mind, so thanks for that!

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

The information about the database on Ancestry says that the records are actually held by London Metropolitan Archives.

Since I think you have access to Ancestry then you probably would not need to visit LMA to access the images.

Hi Nell,

Many thanks for that, much appreciated.

Sadly I do not have access to Ancestry, but am able to search the card catalogue, hence my being able to find the particular database. However, this weekend (23rd-25th August) Ancestry have a free access weekend for UK records, therefore I shall of course be making use of it! ;D

Kind regards

David
