Hi Armagh20,
I to am researching the McAteer family I have found mine are the Clonacle family from Tartaraghan Armagh. The earliest member being Simon McAteer who was married to Bridget ? they had two sons, William & John. Both brothers had sons called William John McAteer,(I suppose to confuse the tax robbers) William McAteer's son, William John went to Scotland and married Anne McQuade, he had no military service. The second William John son of John McAteer like his father had long military service in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. This William John who was married I believe to Mary Elizabeth Bell from Clomnacash Tartaraghan served in the RIR, he is not in either the 1901 or 1911 census. Maybe he was serving with the Army in 1901, but he should have appeared in the 1911 Ireland census. During my research I discovered William McAteer living at Gaol Square Armagh, this I believe was William McAteer from Augrafin Killylea Armagh. The problem arose when I dicovered a William McAteer living in Portadown County Armagh, and he is a painter of houses etc. This is my problem did the Augrafin William McAteer come to live in Portadown.
                                                          Regards Charles McAteer

Hi There, I am a family descendant of the McAteer family of Killylea Armagh. William McAteer was my grandmother's (Eleanor) brother. I would be grateful if you have any further information of the McAteer family and whether any current family in the Armagh district as will be visiting in January 2015. my contact address is bmegennis@anmfvic.asn.au.  Regards,  Barry Megennis
