If you have a family name you can use http://www.askaboutireland.ie/ to search GV.  When you get the GV map, you can use the slider in the top right-hand corner to superimpose a modern map.

Thanks for the info, however the numbering on Griffiths does not seem to correspond

I have since found out that the house at plot 26 on Dundalk Street was opposite Prestons Bar and a couple of doors up from Mackens Bar and that these bars were still there right up to the 1960s/70s - anyone know where on the modern street these bars were located

thanks

i will try and find out for you from my aunt , the uncle of her half brothers was Berry preston who owned the bar which closed in the early 1970s.she would be a more frequent visitor to newtown than my mum who remembers the pub but doesn't remember what was or is opposite it now. have you tried asking on the creggan historical society site which would cover the newtown area?

Hi
Stumbled upon this post and recall lots linked to (Berry) Prestons pub. Often known locally as the last pub in Newtown before the border. It was operating well thru the late 70’s and maybe even into early 1980’s. My recollection was of little or no development on the Dundalk side of the pub (perhaps a house or two) and vaguely believe vacant land opposite. Berry was married to Mary (poss nee Magill) - sister of Magills shop across the border 50metres at the County Bridge Altnamackin - Mary was oft known as “halfpenny Mary” such was her frugal stance helping husband Berry run the country town bar ...
