Edwin Frost
« on: Tuesday 31 December 13 00:58 GMT (UK) »
Trying to trace the ancestors of Edwin Frost   This is the info I have:  born c. 1817 from Yeovil in Somerset.  Mother (Ann) from Castle Cary Somerset born 1774- 1815 and father possibly John Frost 1777-1812 .Edwin came to London and married Eleanor Dicks (1822). 1851 census shows Ann Frost aged 77 living with her son and family at Hanover Square Oxford Street   Have lots of info through census records re Edwin's wife Eleanor and children. 1841 census may be the key but have had no luck as yet finding any record of his father, mother and siblings presumably residing in Somerset.  Any help would be good.  Thanks :)

There is this 1841census  Ages out but have been rounded down. Not a big leap from grocer to tea dealer.

familysearch.org
Baptism 6 April 1817.
Edwin frost
Yeovil Somerset
Father John
mother Ann

You give Ann's dates as 1774- 1815  but she is in the 1851 census with Edwin and Ellen/Eleanor. Also the marriage was 1841 not 1822 and you have John's dates 1777-1812 but Edwin wasn't baptised till 1817 and his ages in the census give a birth date c1817.   :)

Many thanks for your reply.  I should have checked properly and made my dates more explicit.  Eleanor was born in 1822 and married in 1841.  Unfortunately,  looked at the public member trees and added 2 and 2 and got 5, hence the incorrect dates of Ann and John's death.   Yes, I have Ann Frost living with an Edwin in 1851 in Hanover Square but was slightly concerned as the ages were quite out compared with the 1861 census re:
1861 Edwin 44, Eleanor 39, Edwin 13, Frederick 12, Henry 11
1851 Edwin 36, Ellen (?) 40, Edwin 13, Frederick 7, Harry 1
Have considered there may have been a mistake but still quite odd
Maybe it should read:  1851 Edwin 34, Ellen/Eleanor 29, Edwin 3, Frederick 2, Harry/Henry 1
Quite a big mistake, don't you agree?
So, on to 1841!

In 1851 Edwin 36 in 1861 44 so only a couple of years out.
1851 Ellen 40, 1861 39. This is a worry as she has gone backwards 10 years. But there is plenty of rom for mistakes by the enumerator or the people themselves.  Accents can play havoc with names
In the 1851 census I think the children are in their correct birth order and Edwin's age is 3. The mark taken as a 1 to make 13 is actually a tick to the left of the name (compare to others)
Fredericks is a little different- a very badly written 2 taken as a 7.

The ages on the 1841 census I found, having been marked down to the nearest 5, are a good fit.

There is this 1841 census which puts the possible parents of Edwin in London in 1841. So was it his parent's who moved the family to London?
1841 HO107 piece 716 book 8 folio 37 page 25
Prescott Street St Mary Whitechapel
John Frost  69 ??M S (male servant?)  born in county? NO
Ann Frost  72 NO

There is also an Ann in Somerset with possible son John and his possible children

Hi.  Edwin Frost is also my GGG Grandfather and the details I have are about the same as yours.  He was a Leather Draper/Grocer and Tea Merchant (at least I know where my tea addiction comes from).  He died in Epsom in 1866.  His children were : Edwin 1846, Frederick George 1849, Harry 1850, Thomas 1851, Walter 1854, Charles 1856, Elizabeth 1858 and Herbert 1860.    Thank you for his parents details - I did not have that.
Frederick was my GG Grandfather - he was a Leather Dresser.
