Workhouse records/Orphans
« on: Sunday 12 October 14 14:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,
In the 1841 census I have a James Catterall (1806) in Preston Workhouse, whilst his wife and children are in Ribchester workhouse.  Was it usual to separate married couples?
Does anyone know if there are any records relating to these workhouses which might give me more background, and, if so, where I can find them?

I also have a family of children orphaned in 1861.  Any ideas whether there are any records that might help me discover who took them in?
Many thanks.
