Margaret Sawers
« on: Wednesday 11 July 07 06:13 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a marriage for Margaret Sawers in St Ninians, Stirling.

The only information I have is that her husband may be named Alex and that her children maybe Samuel,Alexander,William and Robert.
I think the marriage may have been around 1775?
Sorry, :-\ all very vague I know but I'm hoping some kind soul will help me with something on this.

thanks,

Raylen

Hi Raylen

There's a marriage between a Margaret Sawers and Alexander Chyrstie (that's the spelling in the OPR index) in St Ninians on 14 November 1779. The entry just reads: 'Alexr Chrystie Margt Sawers both St Ninians.'

4 children:

Alexander, born 18 May 1783
William, baptised 16 Jan 1785
Robert, baptised 19 Oct 1786
Samuel, baptised 16 Aug 1788

There are also entries for Agnes Christie, baptised 28 July 1802 and May/ Margaret Christie, baptised 27 June 1805 to an Alexander Christie and Margaret Sawers. They are recorded in both St Ninians and Polmont on the same dates.

Regards

Hannah

Hello Hannah and thank you for that information. :)

Do you think these children all belong to the same parents?
It seems a fairly large age gap doesn't it.

Do you have any birth dates for Alexander Chyrstie/Christie or Margaret Sawers?  I guess that will help to make things a bit clearer if I knew if they were the same people.
I certainly hope there are not two marriages with both having the same
names  :-\  Now THAT would be confusing!

Thanks again for your help Hannah

Hi Raylen

The info I gave you yesterday was from the IGI on CDs which I found in the library in Stirling. As you know, theoretically this is based on OPRs. The entries re Polmont were added by a member of the LDS so I went back to the library this morning and checked the OPR index which is on fiche. There is no record at all of baptisms of May/Mary (not Margaret) and Agnes in Polmont, but they are recorded for St Ninians.

To be on the safe side, I looked up the microfilm entries for all of them. They are all baptisms, no dates of birth are given. In each case it gives only the names of the two parents, the name of the child, the witnesses to the baptism, which in these entries notes the congregation of the church in which the baptism took place (in this case the Relief Church) and the parents' residence which in this case is specifically the village of St Ninians. It could have meant the parish of St Ninians but all the other baptisms have the name of the actual village.

I agree re the age gap but if Margaret was, say, 18 when she married in 1779 she'd have been 44 when Mary was born in 1805 - not impossible. It's a long gap between that and Samuel's birth in 1788 but she could have lost several children between Samuel and Agnes.

There are no other marriages of any AC/MS in the OPR index so it could be the same couple.

I don't have any details re their parents, but, again trawling through the microfiche index, an Alexander Christie in St Ninians was married to a Margaret Forrester and they had a child Alexander in 1756 and a Samuel in 1757 - same name pattern although of course not conclusive.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Hannah

I have only just seen this thread re. Margaret Sawers and I wonder if Hannah has any additional information because this seems to be an incredible coincidence.

Through a will, I have found a John Gillespie who was married to Margaret Sawers at Gartclush Farm, St. Ninians, on April 28, 1782. John Gillespie was my 2nd. Great Grandfather. Margaret's birth has been   ESTIMATED  at 1763.

In addition to that, there is an Alexander Christie Allan in my family tree who was born on September 2, 1894 and I am still trying to find the connection to the name Christie

Hannah, do think there may be a connection here??

Cheers,

Robert.

Hi there:
I visited the old Churchyard of St ninians - in 1993
There I found a foundation stone of sawers - Church Elders back in time.
My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Sawers Christie - born 1825
St Ninians Stirlingshire Scotland - parents Robert Christie/mother Sarah
Porter married 1815 - St Ninians parish : Sarah was born at Bannockburn.
They migrated to South Australia 1838 - ship LLoyds.
Roberts parents: Alexander Christie and Margaret Sawers married 1779
St Ninians Parish Stirlingshire:
I have since found from this site that Robert's sister Mary Christie born 1805
married her christie cousin and migrated to Victoria Australia 1870.
From contact in - re sawers family in victoria Australia - also people from
St Ninians parish- associated with Millar /Gillespie group St Ninians
the sawers family were witness or godparents to christenings to christies at St Ninians
