Holmes family of Cockermouth
« on: Thursday 17 July 14 20:17 BST (UK) »
I am currently researching the Holmes family of Cockermouth. I am particularly interested in the marriage of John Holmes to Martha Fletcher, John appears to be a working class man yet Martha descends from one of Cumberland's wealthiest and most powerful families. How could this happen ?
I would love to hear from anyone who has any knowledge, stories, anecdotes of this family which I have traced back so far to Thomas b1710
Keenan, McKenzie, Knowles, Berry, Gregg, Hutchinson, Allan, Strickland.

Hiya Marra!

Hope you're well.

What kind of date's this marriage?  Do  you know what both were doing just before this?  Fortunes changed pretty quickly.

Take care

Best wishes

Hiya Emms
Great to hear from you
The marriage was at Bridekirk 13th September 1784
John is shown on 1841 census living with his daughter and son in law, it shows an occupation for him but I can't read it. Thats all I know about him. Martha descends from The Fletchers of Cockermouth Hall one of Cumberland's wealthiest and most powerful families.
If you fancy a coffee sometime soon, let me know, it would be nice to catch up
