Just beat me to those yesterday Mabel. Well done.

Perhaps purchase of birth certificate for Sarah or one of the children might throw some light on the mothers maiden name. Needs to be proved before we can research any further.

Investigated that 1849 marriage at Cockermouth but that was Joseph Steel and Mary Sharp. That Joseph Steel belonged to Thomas Steel and Mary Grear so no match. Joseph Steel had been born 1832 Oughterside and they appeared Aspatria and Brayton - Wigton in 1861.

I swear I am baffled by how much I have done in the last five years, would have got nowhere without all you guys

Its been a while concerning this post, so could we recap?

So the Joseph Steel in the 1861 census born in Hayton is Joseph Steel born in 1828 Crosby?

It looks as if it could be that particular Joseph Steel BUT you still need some documentary evidence to support it. There does not seem to be any other that is matching.  Unfortunately the lack of a marriage doesn't help but they could have got married in Scotland - doesn't appear to be anything in Cumberland though.

Judging by the amount of threads on the Steele family, think most of it has been done for free for you by kind RootsChatters.  What an amazing, kind hearted bunch they are.  ;)

When I get some more money, I will purchase a birth certificate to deny or confirm this as being Joseph's family

Had a look at the birth record for Joseph Steel baptised Crosby on Eden 1828, the record gives the place of residence as Brunstock.  By the time Joseph's brother Walter was born the family were living at Park Broom.  All these places are very close together.

Looks like Joseph of Crosby on Eden might well be the same one as in the later census.

Had a look to see if there were any marriages in Crosby but couldn't see anything.
