Moore (More) Crichel Church
« on: Sunday 31 December 06 15:38 GMT (UK) »
I know that this church is no longer used, and is inaccessible on private estate land ... but lots of my ancestors worshipped there, and were buried there.

Does anyone have any external or internal photos or records of, or from this church please ?

If not, where could I find them ?

I see there is a photo of the church in 1904 on the Francis Frith site http://www.francisfrith.com although it looks as if it was given a facelift in the 19th century. (I searched for Crichel House, as the church became the house chapel when the village was moved out of the park.) The site of the rectory is said to lie somewhere under the pond near the house

Thanks for that Fred ... I've seen that Frith picture, and also have the attached one I took myself ... from a great distance, hence the graininess.  You can't get near to it any more, sadly !

I was wondering if anyone else has any other info about tablets, graves in the church or churchyard.  Or knows which record office might have info about the church, or the old estate records ?

I think the current owners might not like you calling their lake a 'pond' !  Even if their forebears did drown the original village to improve the outlook from their grand house ... in which my ancestors scrubbed the floors !

Hi Lydart,

Have you found the description of the church on www.dorset-opc.com?  Perhaps the record office in Dorchester can help out.

The SDFHS have cds, featuring Dorset churches, for sale on their website; might be worth asking if Moor Crichel is featured.

Hi Lydart
There is a bit of info, and a photo, in Historical Monuments in the County of Dorset, vol 5 , East Dorset, published by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments in 1975. There are a few paragraphs of architectural description, with info on fittings(brass, monuments & plate). The names that crop up are Uvedale,Okeden, Cyfrewast, Napier, Wyndham , Gerard and Colles.
There is quite a lot about Crichel House as well.
Hope this helps
Best wishes
Pete

More Crichel church is featured on the S&DFHS CD - I know because I created th CD! In fact, there are over 300 Dorset parish churches featured.

Thanks to both of you for that info ... I know that some of my ancestors were buried at that church, but certainly not from affluent families such that they would have memorials in the church ... I am wondering if there is any record of the graves outside that anyone knows of ... that's where they would be, and I'd love to be able to get info on them ...

How do I get hold of a copy of the CD you mention, Alan, and also the volume 5 that you mention, Pete ??
