Need help with Jane Lowdon
« on: Saturday 08 February 14 13:53 GMT (UK) »
I have found a census return for the family of my 2nd great grand uncle, Simon Mackenzie, living at Simon Mackenzie's, Lochbroom - which will probably be at Rhereabhach.

Simon is living with two of his children, Donald aged 26, and Christina aged aged 28.

From further research, I know that Christina had three illegitimate children, Jeanie 1882, James 1883 and Jessie Ann 1890, but in this 1881 census, there is another child mentioned, Alexander, born 1877. On the census return, it states that Alexander's mother is named as Christina.

Then comes the mystery.

A further child is named on this census return as Jane Lowden, 6 months old, grand-daughter (to the head of the house, ie: Simon) - but no mother is named.

Could this Jane Lowden be a further illegitimate child of Christina's?

I can't find a Jane Lowden mentioned on any later census returns and hope someone on this forum might be able to help me.
Researching the names Mckenzie / Mackenzie from Ross and Cromarty especially Scoraig and Rherivach.

The names Fraser, MacGillivary and Grant from Daviot & Dunlichity.

The name of Fraser from Lanarkshire.

The name of Bell from Northumberland.

The name Chilla / Chylla / Chyla from Poland.

Have you looked for either of the following on Scotlands People:

A marriage between Lowdon & MacKenzie

A birth for Jane Lowdon - probably the easiest way

Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

I have searched for both.
No marriage recorded for a Lowdon to Mackenzie.
No birth record for a Jane Lowdon either, but there is a birth record for a Jane Mackenzie in 1880, with a mother named Christina.
I can only assume that Jane's father's name was Lowdon, that the family were making  "a statement " on the census return.

Actually, when Christina gave birth to the last illegitimate child (that I have so far discovered...) in 1890, she was still single.
