Lookup - James McDonald New/Old Cumnock 1831
« on: Wednesday 09 July 14 23:48 BST (UK) »
Hello!
I finally received my information from Colorado (US), where my ancestor immigrated.  Anyway, the obit. in the newspaper clipping said he was born in Old Cumnock.  I have tried everything I have been able to find online about figuring out who his parents were, but I can't seem to find much.  I was wondering if there was anyone out there who is willing to help me out, or point me in the right direction?  I should point out that the obit. states that he apprenticed as a tailor in Scotland, and continued as a tailor until his death.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

James was born (according to the US census) in Dec 1831.  The census states that he immigrated in 1851, but his obit. says 1857.

I know Scots usually have a special order they name their children, so I will list the names of James' children in the order they were born, in case it's of any help. :)

Sounds like them!  How exciting!

I have to go out of town today, so I will look more into it when I get home.

I have a James McDonald who came to NZ from New Cumnock.  Possibly not in my family, but a great friend of my great grandfather Whitefield Watson of Connelpark, New Cumnock.  He wrote a beautiful obituary for my great grandfather who died in NZ 1840.

PM me your email address if you would like a copy of the obit!

It's also possible that he was a relative to Whitefield, through the Walker family.

But the other possibility of a connection are the tailoring families from the Castle, New Cumnock. I've looked at that connection myself!
